I do not understand the complexities of the hiring/firing of college coaches. I was wondering is anyone could explain.

Hypothetical : If a coach was made aware that his services will not longer be needed and his employment from the university was to be terminated as of after the last game of the season. Would the team have to wait till the end of the season to start interviewing or will they be able to set up interviews after they notified the previous coach of his set termination.

It is a super cut throat business. Coaches should rent. Never buy a house in Knoxville if you coach at UT

As to CDD, Class guy, just not winning
I have watched the defense get worse and worse every game.
If we had anyone step up for the defense, Bray would have us bowl ready now.

its usually done through intermediaries so that there is plausable deniability if your caught.

Better to be ahead of the game then end up with a coach like Dooley.

Hamy was an idiot.

Good grief!

I know the OP is focusing on Gruden (not currently coaching) but back to reality, anyone UT has a shot at is currently coaching another team.

Dave Hart does not pick up the phone and call a coach directly. All of these coaches have agents. UT's people get in touch with the coach's agent to determine interest. This way the coach's current team doesn't have this distraction to deal with, etc. Plus, it would be extremely bad form for UT to poach another coach.

It's not a matter of picking up the phone and making an offer.

It's all informal stuff up to the ultimate moment. So-called representatives of the university have some so-called informal discussions with so-called representatives of a coach to gauge interest. Like Billy getting Bobby to ask Nancy's friend Jane if Nancy likes Billy. It goes from there. Everyone wants to maintain as much plausible deniability on all sides as long as possible. Then everyone sends Jimmy Sexton a big check.

Usually current coaches dont want to be interviewed until after the season because it's not really fair to the players.

you should fire the coach now, but it doesn't matter unless you were to hire a guy like gruden.

the ncaa only allows you to employ a certain amount of coaches. so, in theory, if gruden is your guy, you fire dooley immediately. that way gruden can be hired immediately and would legally be able to go out and recruit.

if you don't have a hire made, than it doesn't matter if the coach stays or goes.

typically, you tell a guy he's fired. that way, he can choose to stay or go. it gives the fired coach an opportunity to finish the season with the team knowing where he stands. or, if he chooses, he can try to go out and line up a new job opportunity.

School can talk to whoever they want to..

BUT.. UT is a state school and has rules they have to go by..

In fact from what I understand, they will have to post the job opening in the newspaper before they can actually hire someone

Job Opportunities with UT Extension!

Do you really believe this? They may "post" the job but it will already be filled.

Hart: "Let's post the job in the Tampa newspaper. Gruden's sure to see it there."

Haslam: "Great idea, Dave. Hope he sends us his resume!"

If I understand you correctly and the system, the school can look for a coach at any time of the coaches' employment. They can fire you early, i.e., Joker at Kentucky, and he can coach out the games, or be looking for a new coach now and fire you at the end of the season. It's all in the hands of the school's powers that be and the way they want to handle it.
GO VOLS!

I am sick and tired of hearing you people say Dooley is a good guy. Yes he puts out that persona but he is a real Dick and yes I have met him about 10 times since he started here.....its a flat joke that he's believed to be "a great guy" when he really isn't at all..

You tell Dooley he's done then immediately start making phone calls. The sooner the better.

Absolutely dude.

Do you really believe all those jobs in the newspapers are actually open jobs? It's common practice. Rules say jobs have to be posted so everyone has a "fair" shot. Person to be hired has been decided upon before job is ever posted. Posting is just a formality.

Because UT is a state, land grant school, I can believe a rule like this would exist, although I cannot say it does with any level of certainty.
