why we never went back to the thicker stripe on the helmet after the retro uni game? Or even why didn't we wear those again or at least the pants with the stripe.

Not really. It was prolly just a one time thing. I wouldn't have a problem goin back to the thicker stripe or the stripe down the pants leg though.

The players lobbied to wear them for the championship game... the east was the home team this year, so there really shouldn't have been any reason we couldn't... the SEC came down and said no way no how.

I would like to see the stripes come back on the pants. But if nothing else I want that addidas logo on the home jersey to be white. It's one thing to have it on the road jerseys, but I want only orange and white on the home jersey.

I like the thin stripe on the helmets better than the thick stripe.

Those retro uniforms are illegal now actually. They have too much orange on them to be away jerseys but not enough orange to be home jerseys. UT had to get a waiver from the NCAA to wear them against UNLV.

I really liked the retro jersey in the UNLV game. There's got to be a away around the NCAA rule. A jersey like that is perfect to wear at home to force LSU into wearing their purple or when it's hot to force the visiting team to wear their dark jersey instead of white.

If ever they decide to put stripes back on the pants, I'd rather see the twin thin stripe and not that ugly large broad stripe.

I like two stripes on the pants. Maybe orange pants on the road. Would like to see the black be much thinner on the road jerseys. No preference on helmet stripe size, but what about orange face masks? More orange the better.

The thin stripe is a return to the "original" stripe. They now need to return to the thinner T on the helment to match. Great teams NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER change the uniform. You people have lost your mind. We need to bring back grey facemasks, pants returned to the stripes down the side and black shoes. If you guys dressed us we would look like Fla A&M, TSU, Grambling or some other program of colorful and ethnic decent. Get with the program and wake up. OU, USC, Alabama, ND Penn State and the handful of other programs let their product on the field bring attention to their school. Not some jigged up alternative type of uniform with no historical importance that fail to remind the opponants of their great conquests of the past. :bad:

Nothing can screw up a great looking uniform faster than grey facemasks.

Something I've noticed that bugs me is that our numbers appear much smaller this year than in previous years. Go back to the bigger numbers used before.

Facemasks started grey, they stay grey. To the devil with all this fashion crap. Thin T, Stripes on pants, Black shoes, Grey facemasks. No Questions.

. . . Leather helmets with straps, laced boots, wool long-sleeve jerseys and full length pants.

Did I miss anything, or am I reaching a little too far back?

If you want to see the evolution of the Vols uniforms and helmets from the beginning... check this out!

Thin T, Stripes on pants, Black shoes, Grey facemasks.

Had a very thin T from 1964-66 and then another thicker T from 1967-76. The T and stripe were bulked up for Johnny Majors first season in 1977 and were the same until this season when the stripe was returned to thin status. The current 'bulkier' T has replaced the interlocking UT as the school's main logo.

Stripes on pants began in 1949 and continued until 1954. In 1963, the double orange stripes appear on the pants and remain for more than 30 years. Stripes removed in 1995. Wide stripe added for 2002 season only.

The Vols wore white shoes from 1975-91.

Facemasks were grey from 1956-1982... and have been white ever since.

__________________________

As far as my opinion goes... it doesn't really matter. Whatever uniform helps recruiting is fine by me.

But I do like the thin stripe on the helmet.... and the current T..... with white facemasks.

I like the pants with no stripes.... black shoes.... and no black at all on the uniforms.

However, since the Vols won the '98 national championship.... the '95 road uniform and '99 home uniform on the link would be fine with me.

We need to return to the traditional Thin stripe, Thin Power T, Grey facemasks, Stripes on pants and BLACK shoes. This crap of messing with uni's needs to stop. The whole thing revolves with selling merchandise.( imagine Mike Hamilton trying to create more revenue ) This is not completely about revenue though, it is about Tradition and maintaining it. Then again maybe the Yankees could go to navy uni's and play on astro-turf. :puke: :puke:

donsargegolf - For a Majors fan you sure missed out. The Thin "T" was changed to a Thicker Power "T' When Majors took over the program. As for the White shoes/ Black shoes debate that has changed almost as much over the last 35 years as the US elects a new president (who really cares). The White shoes makes players look faster while the Black can hide just how fast a player really is.

The Vols have had the thicker Power-T much longer than they had the thinner ones. If your talking of tradition... the Vols have had much more with the current T.

all vol- why do you try to provoke me? If you want Real tradition then lets go back to thin helment stripe, thin pant stripe, and NO T at all. That's when we had the most success, under R.R. Neyland. This man could COACH, discipline, command an Army, engineer dams, architecht the stadium we have today, invent press box to sideline communication and play 10 games without giving up a point. I say that was a better time! 173-31-12, that record even tops VN favorite Full Philmer.

and for you tnvol1, I was going to games and pulling for the Vols long before Coach majors arrived, i chastised my friend coach majors for changing our uni's, to those hideous orange pants, shoes and white facemasks. I'm sorry you have such hatred for a man who has brought great attention to our university for many years. Uniforms are a sign of tradition, pride and a connection to our great storied past. These are to never meddled with like bell bottoms or skirt length! If you must do this to bring attention to your program, you don't have much of a program! :shakehead:

Hey, I'm not trying to provoke anybody. I'm just stating my opinion... same as you. I definately don't want to argue over things as trivial as stripes and shoe colors.... sounds like something my wife would be interested in.

As far as having a tradition and sticking with it. The current 'T' has been used since 1977.... that is the past 27 seasons. I just feel it has more tradition than the others and the Vols should stick with it. There have been 2 other 'T's, the first from 1964-1966 (2 years) and the next 1967-1776 (9 years).

I don't disagree with you regarding Neyland.... but by my count, he changed the uniform style 5 times. Apparantly times changed (from the 1920's to 1950's) and Neyland knew to change with them as well. Some were due to rules changes (ie helmet modifications) and some were just because he could... like adding stripes during the last few seasons he coached.

I think alot of the changes we've seen recently have been minor in nature and done to give the student-athletes a sense that they have a voice (albeit minor) in how the uniforms look. I think Adidas pushed for the wide stripes on the uniforms a few years ago. Just like Nike's orange shoes in 1986 (56-28 loss to Alabama), we'll never see the 2002 wide stipes ever again (8-5 season in 2002).

Thank goodness the uniforms weren't changed like Oregon, BYU and even Miami. (hopefully they never will? ) Their uniforms make them look like Arena Fooball teams.
