Does anyone think the NCAA gave USC a "get out of jail free" card?

I realize up front that it is a long shot, but does anyone think that they NCAA may have simply used the Newton case to work out letting USC off of probation?

You know USC will be using it during the appeal case... I would imagine the NCAA couldn't stand to see its cash cow (USC) sitting at home during the bowls.... I would think they (the NCAA) has provided themselves an "out" now... The can claim they really dropped the hammer on SC & they can also claim that they had to let them off as RB didn't actually know about it... Baiscally a win/win for the NCAA..

I just wonder though if they would do it on purpose or if they have given themselves an "out" by accident...

I think most can agree that the NCAA is all about the money and you know ESPN is going to push for USC to get back into post season play as they want they revenue from UCS's 1st bowl game after probation.... That will be a huge draw for ESPN and ESPN's advertising department...

I think you might be suggesting that ESPN has more power than they actually have

I believe that the committee on infractions decided on USC's punishment whereas Newton's case was one of eligibility up to this point. I would think that USC's punishment will be upheld or they might get minimal relief from their sanctions; I would also think that the situation with Auburn is far from over but I wouldn't hold my breath for a quick judgment.

I may be, but I was refrencing they power of the Dollar..

I imagine ESPN/ABC gives a lot of money to the NCAA for the BCS plus all of the money that the NCAA makes off of sporting events that are aired on ESPN.. I'm not saying that ESPN will make the decision, I am saying that ESPN will be pushing the NCAA to drop the probation and I truly believe that ESPN/ABC has a lot of influence and/or options when it comes down to dealing with the NCAA....

Excellent points.. I thought the same thing about Auburn until the OSU situation happened... That one really woke me up when the NCAA said "you can play in the bowl game, but we will suspend you next year"... Especially after it came out the main guy over the Sugar Bowl had been in on the conference calls with OSU & the NCAA during the decision..

I would be in agreement that the NCAA is inconsistent and ignorant in their punishments. I still doubt USC has much of a case. You could however make an interesting case for Bama in their textbook scandal versus the punishment handed down for OSU.

Well IMO ESPN has at least as much power as say....the Sugar Bowl Committee??..Ask OSU how that influence worked out....Not implying that anybody would try to intercede on USC's behalf at this point but you never know....

I agree that is what I was attempting to say... I would think ESPN/ABC would have more that the SGC... Plus USC is a large draw for Television... They are one of those teams that people either love them or hate them..... There is a huge group that loves to watch them in hopes that they will win.. Then there is an even larger group that likes to watch them so they can root against them.........
