Does text tie Vandy QB to rape case?

Wow, CNN is now Jimmy Hyams.

Anyway, a certain Nashville sports talk radio host is trying his hardest to make a mountain out of mole hill on the DA's comments.

Trying not to be tainted by my loathing of all that is Vanderbilt, and this whole thing really does stink of a cover up to protect the football program. I would welcome any intelligent discussion to convince me otherwise as this situation is much bigger than football. I hope that justice for the victim would be the over riding concern.

I've seen kids do much less get slapped with sex offender status. She's at Vandy, so I think its safe to say it all depends on if her connections are bigger than the football team. At UT that'd be nearly impossible, at Vandy? It's likely she knows someone that is.

Here's something that hasn't been discussed: why are we assuming that the athletic side (AD, boosters, etc.) is responsible for the cover up? The reputation of the university as a whole will be tarnished based on the outcome of the investigation and trial.

We need to keep sight of who has the most to lose. Football? Yes. Athletics? Yes. University? Yes. Which entity has more resources (money, people, etc.) in and around Nashville that could help keep this quiet?

The whole situation reeks. To me, it seems like Vandy is hoping that the whole story will just go away. The longer this drags out, the more suspicious people are going to get.

She will be paid off quietly, the players will plead and receive little to no time and it all goes away.

Vandy does not maintain a separate AD.

Considering they've already kicked four players off the team.

Even if charges are dropped and forgotten about, their football careers, at least at Vandy, are over and done with.

Vanderbilt University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vanderbilt's current annual enrollment is over 12,700 students, and they employ over 3,500 academic staff, not sure if that's counting lower level people like janitors, school police, et al.

While not impossible, the chances of one particular rape victim just happening to have major connections to anyone higher up at the school are pretty slim. While I'm sure that there are plenty of people whose families are deeply connected to the school or who have made going there a family tradition over the years, it just seems unlikely.

That and after the very public and very damaging events at Penn State of late as a result of sex crimes, I seriously doubt any of the senior officals at Vanderbilt would be that stupid as to pull something of their own, even over a one time incident. The fact that it is already public knowledge that four team players have already been charged and kicked off the team and out of the university would make any further major coverups difficult to say the least.

Volbuck I hope you're not equating this to the sham that was the Duke Lacrosse scandal. I'm all about innocent until proven guilty, but there is significant evidence of a crime and it implicates the four. One player has already pleaded to covering it up and he did in fact text Carta Samuels about helping move the victim.

Second point, I REALLY hope that you don't believe that just not being able to play football is sufficient punishment should these young men be found guilty of this heinous crime in a court of law. I find your post disturbing so I am really hoping that I just misunderstood your point. :peace2:

I've never really followed up the scandal at Duke, so it's not something I could really relate too even in the slightest. Only other case I made reference to, had you read my post, was the recent scandal at Penn State.

They've already been kicked off the team, and kicked out of school already, so that part is over and done with. It's all up to the Metro Police and the Nashville DA now, so what VU wants really doesn't matter now. If convicted, or if they accept a plea bargain from the DA before going to trial, I hope they get punished severely for what they've done.

As for Carta Samuels, it would be in his best interests to cooperate fully with Metro detectives about any involvement and/or knowledge he had about the incident. If he was somehow involved directly with the rape, he should be kicked off the team, kicked out of the university, and the DA should drop the hammer on his as well. If all his involvement amounted to was receiving some text messages, he should still come clean about any information he has. In that case I wouldn't kick him off the team, but suspending him for a few games wouldn't be out of the question, if only to make an example of him and to serve as a warning to others.

Attorneys for Vandenburg asking for text messages to defend their client, and possibly bring involvement from Vanderbilt coaching staff to light.

From the Tennessean:

"A new court filing in the case against four former Vanderbilt University football players charged with rape seeks evidence of text messages sent by coaches that lawyers for one of the ex-players think could shed light on what happened.

The filing by attorneys for one of the players offers the first suggestion in court proceedings that members of the Vanderbilt football staff might have had some level of involvement in the incident that would be relevant to the criminal investigation."
