Nick Saban's hiring created a buzz around Bama's recruiting. Although his late arrival wasn't enough to sway some big prospects his way, he has upgraded the class nonetheless. He bolstered the defensive line by landing in-state DT Kerry Murphy (Birmingham, Ala./Hoover) and luring versatile Luther Davis (West Monroe, La.) away from LSU. Talented quarterback Robert Marve (Tampa, Fla./Plant) eventually switched to Miami, but Saban was able to land former Miami commit QB Nick Fanuzzi (San Antonio/Churchill). On signing day, Saban was able to lure two good receivers into the program in Brandon Gibson (Mobile, Ala./UMS Wright Prep) and Marquis Maze (Tarrant, Ala./Tarrant). Both guys can add speed and explosiveness to the offense. OG William Vlachos (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), a one-time grayshirt candidate, also signed on to the 2007 class.

Saban's first class was much like CLK's first class is shaping up to be and as we know it was followed up by a #1 class in 2008. We may not be #1 next year but I'm betting were top 5. Even the great Nick Saban couldn't sway most of the big prospects in a short period of time.

Last time I checked, the class most expect UT to have won't be close to #10.

Did something change?

(that's a sincere question btw)

Saban's class was 17th when he took over. It finished 10th according to rivals.

That doesn't seem to be the direction of UT's class this year.

Saban landed a lot of in-state guys to get that ranking. Something that we don't have the luxury of.

HUH? where you getting that from? This is rivals maybe your looking at a scout ranking? They finished 17 in rivals ratings unless I'm missing something directly from their website.

The NegaVols & Fulmerites are on the warpath and they're not listening to anyone. It's best to go quietly into the night and rest up for Signing Day.

Cheers.

Yeah... easier to call someone names than to deal with reality, right?

I am neither a "negavol" nor a "fulmerite"... but I know the difference between a cow patty and a T-bone.

Saban also went 6-6 in his first year. That class wasn't even where his 2nd year was. Oh wait they were #1. I am not expecting too many fireworks on NSD.

why do you persist with directing comments at me? I don't think I've directly addressed you a single time and yet you feel the need to defend yourself to me. If I've never addressed you, then what makes you feel inclined to constantly defend your position or to comment on my intentions?

I was merely making a comment which implied that people have been arguing on the boards all day long and it looks like very few people have any intention to concede.

U don't think we get Nu'Keese? I have a big hunch he comes. Just from what I have gathered him and Chris Walkers friendship. Nu'Keese calls Chris "Family"

He has been quoted to have said that Tennessee is out of the picture.

sjt18, I remember you from the GovolsXtra board. You were always contentious and usually made points that were entirely antithetical to my thinking.

However, I completely agree with everything you have posted recently about this recruiting class. I am neither a 'Fulmerite' (far from it, actually) nor a Nega-vol. I simply won't give blind devotion and carte blanche to a coach that has yet to prove himself as a consistent leader. That being stated, I hope Kiffin is wildly successful.

Unfortunately, most of the "homers" on this board are forgiving or even excusing Kiffin's greatest missteps so far: the Tajh Boyd snub; the handling and poor timing of the Thigpen situation; his inability to land the prospects the Vols most need, namely QB and OL; and Kiffin's odd ability to irritate certain members of the media (don't think it matters? wait until Kiff hits a rough patch - the press can be pretty relentless and popular opinion is easily swayed).

This recruiting class, from all signs so far, will be mediocre. No matter what two guys on Chattanooga radio with a "source" say. And we as Vol fans can expect more from this staff, which was constituted to be a recruiting juggernaut. Orgeron, Thompson Gran, recruiting coordinators from other schools. On paper, this staff should be doing better.

And even all the "Posi-Vols" must admit this was a heavily disappointing weekend.

It's tough, admittedly, going into Wednesday hoping for surprises.

Its not disappointing its called not expecting a NC in his first year. Its called understanding how sports are played and coached.
I am a huge fan and I want more than anything to beat the brakes off of every team we play every year. But reality sets in and we have slipped into mediocre football for the past 7 years. And now you want to talk about our new coaches and draft class being mediocre??

You have to understand we are not going to change the heart of a player in less than a month. We might sneak up and take a few players from under their noses but its not going to be a top 5 class. If we make it into the top 10 I think that is a huge win for us this year. Some teams fall apart when their HC is fired and it takes years to bounce back. From the looks of things so far we made changes and in about 2 months put together a great staff on paper. And I know that proof is in the pudding but the ingrediants are looking pretty dang good.

I mean you do remember that last year I think we were 35th on NSD at the end, and now with a HC change and entire new staff we are 17th. Looks to me like Mediocre left with his staff and took a walk down the road that is named after him!
