I don't know much about Saddam and I haven't read too much into this because the paragraph under the pic is tons and tons of pages. Can someone on here explain to me briefly what the deal is with this? I know it's a pic from the 80's but did we (the USA) used to be friends with Saddam or something? I thought he was always just a bad enemy that Americans always hated so it confused me when I came across this pic.

Iraq and Iran were fighting a nasty shooting war. It was US policy at the time that Iran represented the greater threat, so it was decided to "help" Hussein and Iraq.

That decision later came to bite the US in the ass, but there was no grand conspiracy.

old rummie got mad because saddam wouldn't let him rub oil on his shaved abs one day and that's how the gulf war started.

We backed Iraq simply because they opposed Iran. That's how American foreign policy works.
