First, I've never understood why they start at the 25 yard line. If no yardage is gained, it's still what, a 42 yard FG? They have a relatively easy chance of at least getting 3. Why not put the ball at the 35?
Second, they've changed the rule to make them go for 2 after the 2nd OT period. Why not make them do it from the get go?

Because it is more interesting this way?

Yeah ive always said the same thing. I think at least start at 50,45, or 40 to at least need to move the football and get a 1st down or try to get a reasonable long distance fg try. But to have a 3 and out and still get 3 points i dont like.

Now after 4 or 5 OTs it turns into a 2 pt contest - no idea idea how they came up with that but both teams get 1 shot from the 2 pt line. See Va Tech vs UNC yesterday.

What changes have been made for 2019?
There has been one major adjustment to the overtime format for 2019. Teams will rotate two-point conversion tries beginning in the fifth overtime, eliminating possessions starting at the opposing 25-yard-line. Each offense will have just one chance to convert the two-point try before the other team gains possession.

I don't agree with just the 2 point conversion if a team hasn't scored a TD or FG after 4 OT's. I can see having to go for a 2 point conversion in the 3rd OT. I think the longest OT before the new rule of going for 2 was 7 or 8 OT's. Believe it was Tennssee and Arkansas.

so far as I can tell it's not related to just 2 point conversion if teams haven't scored in the first 4. It's after 4 it goes to just 2pt'rs regardless of what happened in the first 4.

I'm guessing it's motivated by time issuses and player wear and tear.

I think they should follow the NHL idea for OT. Play 7 on 7 in the first OT and if still tied after that, put 3 non- kickers out on the field let them try kicking PAT's. Would end quickly and be pretty entertaining
