Given Senator Nelson’s hard core earmarking history as an appropriator, the word on the street is that this is the real carrot that could get Nelson to agree to some cover amendment that would allege to protect the innocent unborn from government funding of abortion, but, in fact, would not.

The White House and Democratic Leadership in the Senate has told Senator Nelson they will close every military base in Nebraska — a threat that is not credible, really — but they have also offered Senator Nelson between $300 million to $500 million in earmarks, according to key hill health care operatives. These hundreds of millions will be available for whatever he wants to spend them on in Nebraska.
----------------------------------------------

Unless a Sanders or Burris — or some other liberal (aka hard core socialist)— objects to the bill having no public option, then if Nelson holds the bill dies, and if Nelson does not hold, the bill passes. Given that the Dems have caved to Lieberman — this is the whole ball game — Senator Nelson.
------------------------------------

The next 36 hours are key to this fight, given the fact the Dems caved to Lieberman. It’s all about Nelson now, plain and simple. Will he do what his constituents want and kill the bill, or will he take the cash?

If he takes the cash, I hope Nebraskans put him out on his ear the next election, but then, they elected him in the first place.

Elections have consequences, and liberty gained through much blood and sacrifice can be readily traded in for empty promises by those who did not have to earn it themselves.

One of the more odius items of Obamacare is that citizens are mandated to have health insurance and penalties are foisted on those who choose not to buty health insurance.

Whats this I heard this morning about him going to the Dems and trying to "appease" them concerning the health care bill, by possibly "throwing in some incentives to get them on board." It was awfully early and I just heard the tail end of it on the local newstalk radio station. Can yall clarify what that was all about?

Gs, please take it easy on the cut and paste. A simple note of your perspective will more than suffice. Not taking a shot at you bud, just asking for an opinon from you.

I don't pay hardly any attention to political contributors of any ilk, preferring to form my own opinions independently.

Speaking of taking shots, I've not seen discussed the new Obama ROEs (rules of engagement) which places American soldiers in Afghanistan in much greater danger.

From what I understand they took the part where people could enroll in medicare at 55 out of the bill. Obama also told Nelson that if he did not go along with it they would close the Air Force base in Nebraska which employes 10,000 people.

By the way, I thought that all healthcare negotiations were going to be aired on C-SPAN?

So its not that he was offering incentives, its that he was offering ultimatums. Nice.

Leiberman killed the 55 bill. (think we may be expecting shorter life spans under obamacare??)

Anyway for early Saturday moring readers, here is the latest on obambicare: Link and link.

The skinny; Nelson emerged at 10 pm from a meeting with Reid, Schumer and white house staffers and announced to the press; "we have no deal."

His issue is government funded abortions.(plus some monetary medicade bonuses for Nebraska)

(is it a short step from gov funded abortions to gov mandated abortions as it was in China?)

If Reid allows an amendment that takes out the gov funded abortions then he still doesn't have the 60 vote because some leftists will jump ship.

No one really knows for sure what will happen at 7:30 AM tommorrow in the senate.

Reid says he will unveil his manager's amendment on Saturday, the language used to keep all 60 Democrats in favor of the bill and opposing the Republican-backed filibuster. He will also unveil the financial numbers lawmakers have been waiting for after an unrelated Saturday morning vote.

The manager's amendment will likely include another attempt to craft language to satisfy Nelson, unless Reid can get pro-abortion Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe to support the bill.

Snowe had been thought to oppose the bill, but Reid and his colleagues are reportedly going after her to back it because of the breakdown in getting Nelson to sign on to the measure.

President Barack Obama recently met with her and she told CBS News, he'd "prefer to get this moving" but added that she urged him to put off the bill until next year to work on her concerns.

(from NARAL spokesperson:) "Snowe is the only Republican to cross party lines to vote for health-care reform legislation in committee. And she’s the only Republican to vote twice against a ban on abortion coverage."

Thursday, Snowe said the Democrats timetable for a pre-Christmas vote was totally "unrealistic."

Before Reid can set in motion the steps toward a vote on the bill, the Congressional Budget Office would first need to return a cost estimate on any potential deal.

An added complication is the blizzard expected to hit Washington overnight, which could make it difficult for senators to make it to the Capitol.

“What we know for sure at the moment, is that we've seen the Pelosi bill and we've seen the Reid bill, but none of us ... have seen the newest bill, which is a mystery to virtually everyone, including the Democratic leaders of the Senate." (Mitch McConnel)

At a morning press conference, the Republicans used visual aids to press their point. The health care bill from the House and Reid’s original legislation in the Senate were piled on a table — next to a skeleton of packing tape meant to represent the manager’s amendment that has yet to emerge.

Dagnap that climate change, if even one dem can't make it to town, no 60 votes.

McCain said he would actually like to know what is in this legislation since he or any of the republicans havn't even been able to read it.

Talk about a pig in a poke!

The more I study politics the more I embrace the idea, political power is power only if you take it seriously, I've always had a problem taking it seriously and now I can't take it seriously even if I wanted to.

And your link directly relates to the topic of health care how?

How's your health doing after somone kills your dumbass??

Obama administration has notified Congress of the State Department's intention to contribute $400,000 to foundations run by Muammar Qaddafi's two children — $200,000 each for daughter Aisha and son Saif. Saif, you may recall, is the son who escorted the Lockerbie terrorist Abdel Baset al-Megrahi home to a hero's welcome in Libya

That ought to get someone some good health care!!!!!!!!!

Which makes me wonder if state department employees should get extra health insurance coverage since I'm thinking of going postal at foggy bottom.

Actually my real inclination is to take my shot gun to next years congressional election polls and if there aren't any acorns to shoot, then just pulling both triggers on the polling booth.

Heck what are they going to charge me with, disturbing the peace??

Invest in snow shoes is my best advice.

Or Snowe shoes if you're a liberal.

"Dumbass", real cute gs.

Just kidding, I know you are highly intelligent, impeccably observant, inscrutably astute, surprisingly succinct and infinately knowledgeable. :)

Sorry if my answer didn't satisfy your inquisitive, highly intelligent, impeccably observant, inscrutably astute, surprissingly succinct and infinately knowledgeable mind.

The latest is that the Senate and House Bills will have to be reconciled to read the same (how many pages??? over 1,000 minimum,) in a couple of days to be able to meet the Christmas Eve passsage goal.

It may happen but we are going to get a pig in a poke if it does.

Five reasons it might not pass.

This has GOT to be a reference to the Patriot Act and GWB. Unfailingly accurate, I might add.
