Game 4: Auburn vs. Tennessee
Advertisement
With a hundred thousand orange clad faithful cheering them on, the Tennessee Volunteers used a 14 yard touchdown run by running back Cedric Houston in the 2nd overtime to defeat Auburn 33-30 at Neyland Stadium in our EA Sports simulation.
Coach Phillip Fulmer, who began the game using both of his freshman quarterbacks, used Erik Ainge almost exclusively in the 2nd half and overtime to help lead the Volunteers to victory. Ainge completed 17 of 23 passes for 2 touchdowns and one interception in the game, while Schaeffer finished 5 of 9 for 44 yards, while adding 19 yards on the ground. After getting injured in last week's simulation, Houston came back strong against the Tigers, amassing 144 yards on 24 carries, with two touchdowns, including the game winner in the 2nd overtime.
One area of pregame concern for the Vols was their rushing defense and Auburn running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams made the concerns valid for Vol fans. Williams ran the ball 29 times, amassing 196 yards rushing and scoring twice for the Tigers. His big day was overshadowed by his fumble on a 3rd down play from the Vols 7 yard line in the 2nd overtime. Although Auburn recovered the fumble, they were forced to go for a field goal, eventually opening the door for Cedric Houston's game winning TD. Auburn QB Jason Campbell spent most of his day handing off to the Auburn running backs, but still managed to go 11 for 22, with one touchdown and one interception.
The Vols started the scoring midway through the first quarter, using a short passing game to set up Cedric Houston's first TD, an 8 yard scamper to put the Vols up 7-0. The two teams then traded scores until halftime, with the Vols heading into halftime up 17-14. The game proceeded quickly in the second half, with the Tigers taking a 21-17 lead into the start of the fourth quarter. The Vols went back up 24-21 with 10 minutes remaining, but a field goal by Auburn kicker John Vaughn tied the game with 3 minutes remaining. The Vols drove to the Auburn 37 with 10 seconds remaining, but a 54 yard field goal attempt by James Wilhoit fell just short as time expired.
The Tigers won the toss in overtime and elected to play defense. The Vols used short passes and the running of Cedric Houston to get to the Auburn 3, but Coach Fulmer elected to take the three points on the Vols' first overtime possession. Auburn was only able to gain two yards in three plays as the Vol defense came up big and the Tigers settled on a 40 yard field goal by Vaughn to knot the game at 27.
In the second overtime, Auburn used a screen pass to Cadillac Williams to get a first and goal at the UT 10, but their drive stalled after an incomplete pass, a 3 yard gain on a draw by Campbell and Williams fumbled at the Vols' 7. Vaughn again came on to add three points to put Auburn up 30-27, but the Vols used Ainge's passing to set up Cedric Houston's game winning 14 yard TD run.
The Volunteers next game (and EA Sports simulation) will be against Georgia as the Vols travel to Athens on October 2nd. Next up for Auburn is Louisiana Tech, who will traveling to the Plains to take on the Tigers the same day.
