Why is ut playing these early powerpuff games?

Not sure if that's a serious question, but I'll bite. Every single SEC team will play some non-conference games against lesser opponents. It's not really fun for the fans, but they're not going to play top tier teams every game. And, Virginia doesn't really qualify as a powder puff. They're down now, but historically are a decent power 5 program.

Powderpuff? Austin Peay? Oh my, look at some of their last years opponents. What a sadistic and horrific schedule their players endured!!! Oh the humanity!!

Bama plays UTC later in the year. AM plays Abilene Christian later in the year.

Some things you have to remember about the schedule, a lot of these games were scheduled 5 years ago. 5 Years ago Virginia was 8-5 (4-4 in ACC) so they were not terrible like today. Now APSU and these really lower level teams are simply warm up/scrimmage games for a team like ours.

It didn’t use to be this way. I’ve been a fan for almost 60 years.
For instance, in 1970 the non conference opponents were SMU, Army, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

... and Tennessee also played UCLA and South Carolina that year as non-conference opponents. Tennessee only played 5 conference games that season.

Does the clock not stop when you go out of bounds? Maybe I’m just frustrated right now and I have known and forgotten this.

Honestly, it’s because they will come for $400K as where we would have to pay Ga State almost a million.
