From ESPN's Page 2:

"What's Wrong With NCAA Sports in a Single Anecdote: Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl has been suspended for eight games and docked $300,000 per year in salary. His offense: "Pearl acknowledged in September that he misled investigators about photos taken of him and recruit Aaron Craft, when Pearl improperly hosted the prospect at his home in 2008. Tennessee also revealed Pearl and his staff made excessive calls to recruits." Phone calls! Had his picture taken! Oh my god!

The real scandal in Tennessee men's basketball is that a pathetic 40 percent of the players graduate. (Check any Division I sport's graduation rate here.) The University of Tennessee doesn't seem to care -- or it would take meaningful action. The Tennessee Board of Trustees doesn't seem to care, the SEC doesn't seem to care, the Tennessee boosters don't seem to care and the NCAA doesn't seem to care. Why should public universities or the NCAA care about education? But recruiting violations are serious stuff, since they could interfere with Tennessee's ability to win games and make money."

Ahh...more BS from UT hater. I'm sure the facts are true but check the other major Universities with decent athletics and we will not be the worst. It's not that we cant graduate kids...they gotta be here...think about how many were arrested or kicked off team in last three years. Also think about the good kids we did graduate. It will get better! So whoever wrote this article at ESPN can go do some more research and compare with other schools to even make a decent argument. UNLV never graduated one single player during their run in the early 90's!

Is this really true at this time? I saw some recent figures about all UT sports graduation rates over the past year, men and women, a couple of months ago, maybe on GoVol.com. While the number wasn't great, it was way more than 40%. I'm thinking maybe it was in the 60 - 70% range for men's basketball. I'll admit it probably has been around 40% a few years back. Duke and Ramar time. I just can't buy 40%.

It seems to me I recall reading the same as you.....however if 40% is true I would have
to agree that it is PATHETIC

No BS. Was published in the Nashville Rag last month. Link below.

Kids that are kicked off or arrested are not an excuse nor should be excluded.

Kids leaving early for the NBA (an occurrence for UT more rare than an orange unicorn) count against a University's score, even though most that jump are making 1,000X more than their Communications or PE degrees would pay them.

The argument to check everyone else is weak. If you are a fan of your school, what someone else is doing shouldn't matter. Clean up your own house before criticizing someone elses.

The breakdown of the University of Tennessee's graduation success rates as compared to the federal rates for individual sports during this time period were as follows:

Men's Sports GSR Federal Rate
Baseball 50 27
Basketball 40 36
Cross Country/Track and Field 80 73
Football 53 46
Golf 57 30
Swimming and Diving 68 61
Tennis 71 25

Women's Sports GSR Federal Rate
Basketball 100 85
Cross Country/Track and Field 100 77
Rowing 89 76
Golf 86 83
Soccer 100 89
Softball 85 48
Swimming 85 63
Tennis 100 88
Volleyball 100 67

Vols Graduation Success Rate dips; football worst in SEC | wbir.com

40% GSR is pretty bad, but it's still better than the Federal average. The low rate just shows that the entire country has a real problem graduating BBall players. UT is above the Federal rate in EVERY SPORT!

Easterbrook needs to shut his bittera** mouth and stick to convincing himself that his son is a really good ball player.

That somehow makes it less pathetic? Bruce knew that most of those guys were shady from the outset. Ramar was just pure class. As for federal averages, UT should aspire to be a lot better than it is. Just doing enough to get by shows where the priorities are. No one cares until it affects the bottom line or shows up in the loss column. It isn't just a UT thing in any way though. There are plenty of guys in college just because of their athletic ability who can't read.

if the kids don't care enough to take advantage of a free education, then why should anyone else care? thats the problem these days, you have to hold peoples hands to get they to do anything. what do they want coaches to do wake the students up, help them get dressed, make sure they eat a balanced breakfast, walk with them to class, sit in the class, hold their hands across campus to the next class, make sure they study, and dont let them get into criminal ventures? i mean damn, lets go!!!!!!!!! i would kill for a free ride, however thats not enough from some i guess.:no::no::no:

Why is it so sad? Most of these kids don't want to go to college anyway. The saddest thing about college sports is that in football and basketball our entire amateurism development leagues are funneled through higher learning institutions. You go to college to better your career options. You shouldn't be forced to go simply because it's required for you to showcase your talents. Graduation rates shouldn't matter to anyone. The NCAA doesn't care so who gives a **** abou what some second rate blogger from ESPN says?

Agreed. For the superstars who are only there for a year or two before going pro, it shouldn't matter. They will be making high 6, 7, or 8 figure salaries at 21. For those that won't, they should sieze the opportunity to get a free education.

Why the hell should we clean up our program when no one else will(See Alabama textbook scandal.See Cam Newton Auburn scandal). Actually I agree with you but it will continue to leave us behind the Bamas and Floridas in football and the Kensuckys, er Kentuckys in basketball. In an anonymous poll of college basketball coaches 75% admitted to cheating and the rest abstained.:frown:
