Ed Orgeron says TN tried to hire Matt Canada as Offensive Coordinator this year

more to work with right now at UT which is crazy to think. They have Guice for this yr, a crap QB and about 3 OL worth a damn. LSU is the one SEC team i think may really struggle but since their name is "LSU" i know that nobody will agree, which is fine.
Can TN beat them is all that matters to me? They recruit so well consistently that I wouldn't overlook them if Mr.Bean was coaching.

Did it happen? No idea.

Does it matter? Not at all. Didn't hire him, so it's a hole in empty space.

Does it help the Vols if we did? No. Does it hurt us? No.

Does it help LSU if we did? No. Does it hurt them? No.

Does it help Matt Canada if we did? Mildly, maybe. Does it hurt him? No.

Having real trouble finding any reason to care whether this occurred or not. :)

The reality is that both times when we needed an OC, Butch still had the "hot seat" talk around him.

DeBord came in Butch's 3rd season. We were 7-6 and 3-5. Everyone knew if we had a worse record than Butch would most likely get fired. An OC on the rise (like Canada) probably didn't want to take that risk with the high expectations to win. So you take someone who is old and it doesn't matter if it helps/hurt his status for a better job.

It's the same scenario this time. I think Canada was in the mix for sure, but Butch probably put more time trying to get Helfrich to come. That may have backfired because Canada may have been number 1 guy and now he's only 2/3 guy (2 season removed)? I would've been insulted too. haha!

Canada has likely been on Butch's radar for a long time. When we were looking for an OC, I had him as #2 on the candidate list behind Mark Helfrich. So I wouldn't be surprised if Butch made queries about him; I also wouldn't be surprised if Orgeron were dramatically exaggerating this. Making a phone call to Canada is different from offering him a contract.

You made a list?

I don't think Larry Scott would have come here if he hadn't been promised the OC job soon. The only thing I know is that I wouldn't take Orgeron's word for anything. It hasn't been mentioned but Orgeron denied calling our mid-term EE's in January of 2010 until he was confronted with some names of players he had called.

I don't recall any hot seat talk at all around Jones after his second season when he hired Debord. This year, year 5, after blowing a golden opportunity to do something special last year, is the first time the hot seat talk has truly grown any legs....and even that talk is really only amongst the media and fans, certainly not the administration.

“Coach O” said that Tennessee was one of several teams that “were dying to get him.”

Mike DeBord left Tennessee for Indiana following the 2016 season, leaving the offensive coordinator position vacant in Knoxville. But the gig always felt like it was going to Larry Scott or former receivers coach Zach Azzanni. You just got the feeling that Butch Jones wanted to stay in house with this one.
Orgeron paints a different picture though. Check out this excerpt from Godfrey’s interview.

"The day we got him here, we knew Notre Dame, UCLA, Tennessee was all after him. That’s not all of them. These schools were just dying to get him. So we had to move. And the guy was wanted, so we had to make the right offer," Orgeron says.

Hmmmmm

Matt may have made the right choice because there's a decent chance he will be HC of LSU by years end. LSU will majorly regress under O this season mark my word.

Bold prediction dd! Hope you're right, esp when LSWHO visits Neyland.

Typical Ogrespeak: Errrbody want. We get. We better. Errr...

CBJ was never going to make wholesale changes to the offense. That limited the prospects UT could pursue and ruled out a lot of big-name coordinators.

Orgeron has been known to tell a stinky or two in his career. I still don't forgive him for calling all of our EE's the day after Kiffin left and told them not to attend classes at Tennessee. Total scum.

If LSU does poorly, in part, much of that is on Canada to start with.

So, let me understand this... you think (the way I am reading this) Canada does well, yet Coach O basically leads a losing team? (or something along those lines?) So, you think LSU will have three HCs on salary by the end of year?

I have to say you are making one hell of a prediction, maybe you will be right, but I think the chances of LSU paying 3 HC at one time as not very good odds. If LSU does poorly, which I admit I don't know, but assuming you are correct... why would you think they would hire Canada as HC?

I am so confused.

What do you expect Orgeron to say? Of course he's going to say all the big programs wanted him; it makes Orgeron look that much better, whether the statement was true or not

If true (big if) you wonder if maybe Butch is changing the offense some. Larry Scott has a pro style background.

Its no secret that many schools wanted Canada, I am shocked that people are shocked about any part of his statement.

Whether he will be worth the $1.5 million a year is a different story, which will be answered over the next few months.

Anyone who believes anything Ed Orgeron says is a fool.

While all this info about Tennessee and Matt Canada could be true, let's remember a few things about Coach O and his credibility:

1. Coach O was at Miami with the Canes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when their reputation for questionable recruiting and rowdy behavior was well established. It's been said, learn from the best.

2. He and Fast Lane Kiffin worked together at USC. Coach O thought so much of Kiffin that he tried to hire him at as OC at Ole Miss, after Ed got that HC job.

3. Guess who was an assistant at Ole Miss under Coach O? None other than Mr. Escort Service Caller himself, Hugh Freeze. Maybe that's where all his connections came from, no well-paid escort could possibly have understood what Ed was saying.

4. When Kiffin got the Tennessee job, one of the first calls he made was to Coach O, who accepted immediately. We know how all that ended.

Just sayin'...
