One of the best basketball players ever in Chattanooga. Had great career at Central High School and then signed with UT.

But had a star struck career in Knoxville.

1. He played during probably the worst stretch of Vol hoops ever under John Sines who preceeded Mears. I think he was on the team that went 4-19, worst Vol team ever.

2. Even worse he got caught up in the betting scandal of the early 60s. A teammate from NY took money to shave points. He approached Eddie who turned him down immediately but did not report it as he was required to do so he was kicked off the team.

Never knew Eddie but from every person I know who knew him talked about what a great person he was.
Tough situation.

Owned a successful medical supply business in Ringgold Georgia where I live. From what I understand only played for one year and then got kicked off the team in order to clean up the mess from that mob scandal where his roommate got compromised.

Forgot to add Central lost to Lenoir City in 1958 in the state finals when there was only 1 classification. I have heard players from both teams have remained good friends over the years.

When you go into LC on Highway 11 they have a sign:

"Welcome to LC, home of the 1958 State Champions," 67 years later!
