Edie Darby

I doubt it. She’s not even on scholarship. She’s just here to get a degree and run scout team.

Yes, I suspect she will play decent bench minutes by the time she leaves. Particularly if she can become a really good defender and hit the 3 like big sis.

If she can’t shoot at all like Tess she’s going to earn some minutes.

I'm going to disagree. I think she has some potential. Wish she would grow a couple more inches....

I know Edie has a lot of supporters on this board she is not going to magically transform into a 6'1 guard. She is small and her wing span is actually disproportionately small. In basketball, it tends to go the other way, with better players having wingspins wider than their height. She is not a super explosive player either. I am a "never say neve"r guy but her physical limitations will be difficult to overcome. I know she has a great work ethic but the distribution of athletic gifts is not always fair.

Not sure who's talking about magic...

My answer: Absolutely

Remember Shannon Bobbitt?

From Wikipedia:

“Following a stellar college career in which 5'2" Bobbitt won two Division I national titles at the University of Tennessee, she decided to enter the WNBA and began her professional basketball career playing point guard for the Los Angeles Sparks.”

Some here are wanting Jada Walker, who played at Kentucky, from the portal this year, she is 5’7.

Ever notice how many rebounds 5’8 Jordan Walker slips in and gets? We often play both Walker and Powell together to guard the short quick guards of other teams.

Edie Darby is 5’7, that’s 5 inches taller than Bobbitt, 3 inches taller than Miles, 1 inch taller than Powell, and 1 inch shorter than last year’s WNBA Champions Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot.

This year, Freshman Edie happens to have older, more experienced point guards ahead of her. Even so, she is described by her teammates as “a baller.” Think they cheer her on, just because she’s nice? I don’t think so. They see how she works. She is a smart gritty player, who can shoot. She may not be interested in playing pro ball, I believe she’s majoring in pre-med, but I believe Edie will be our fantastic Starting point guard at some point in her Lady Vol career.

GO EDIE!

More, hang on, my iPad refreshes and erases what I write.

I am rooting for Edie but it's apples and oranges as far as Bobbitt goes. Even before Bobbitt got to UT she was a playground legend with handles I'm not sure I've seen since she's played. Her passing ability was crazy good. She also balled out at the NJCAA level. It's not fair to either to compare. Their natural abilities and talent can't be compared.

Watch some of her videos they are a must watch. She has a FB page too.

Does she have the attributes that the Coach desires from her guards. The ability to defend quick athletic guards is essential, including not getting posted and defending the baseline, failures of many player. The recent game with SLU their offensive game plan was focused on player weaknesses, as the early LV substitutions demonstrated. Were she to play on a mid-measure she would be more appropriate. This board has debated the same question re: Saunders, Rennie, and Kushkituah to name a few.

You’re exactly right. to make the comparison of Edie to Bobbitt is one those don’t you dare go there

Wait and see. Bobbitt proves it’s not just about size.

Yep, it’s about heart. I’ve been asking for a Bobbitt 2.0 for a while. Miles could be that girl but she’s got to want it.

Having someone with a low center of gravity and quick feet on the perimeter is top notch to go along with our size. Would love to have someone who could harass opposing guards and create more turnovers for us.

Jada Walker is that kind of player, proven and has the heart to match.

On the men’s side a couple of my favorite players ever were Earl Boykins and Muggsy Bogues. Just a couple menaces out there. They would run right under peoples arms and just disappear with the ball for a layup 🤣

To lead a championship team at that size you have to have the dog in you. If she is going to make an impact, she'll have to play with a mean streak on defense, be a distribute first PG, and become an expert in drawing fouls.

Hannah Barber type player. She gets beat to heck in the SEC but she gives her all every minute she’s on the floor.

I had to come back to this post cause I didn’t give Bobbitt her due but I will now. Of course it’s not about size so I’m not going to say Edie won’t be a good player but my thing is don’t compare her to Bobbitt this lady ran the fast break like Magic, crossed a defender like Iverson, I won’t say Curry but hit the three like Klay Thompson and when we were in a few tight games and I know the LSU games were nip and tuck she hit clutch shots.

Reiterating a point made by other posters, this comparison does not hold up. Bobbitt had almost superhuman lateral quickness. Nobody, including the then best guard in the country Ivory Latta, could get by her. Viv Stringer, after the LVs knocked them out of the NCAAs, said that Bobbit was disturbing and that she was a midget mutant. And defenders would not get tight to her because she would leave them in the dust. And as pointed out, She had Harlem globetrotter handles. But even with those incredible tools, Shannon could not make at the next level, she hit a limit where the size discrepancy was just too much to overcome.

Vandersloot, like Steve Nash, is a rare exception who possessed a Tom Brady-like vision to see angles and options that other people don't but they still were major defensive liabilities.

To some extent your post is like saying, look Joshua Dobbs is two inches taller than Patrick Mahommes so he has what it takes to be an MVP and Superbowl champion

If not for the family connection, we would not be having this conversation and she would be playing at some lower tier D1 school and no one ever think of her as future contrbutor or be dreaming of her coming into the program through the transfer portal.

If there is one fair point of agreement on this board, is that the LVs desperately need upgrades at the guard position. I am a fan of Jordan W. and respect her leadership and determination to overcome catastrophic knee injuries. And think Powell and Miles can be decent back-up options next year. But, to be a genuine powerhouse, the LVs need a better option.

Edie has a long way to go to match the strength, physicality, and quickness of Powell and Walker, so she is kind of two levels behind.

I am not saying she can't in some absolute sense become the LVs starting PG but she has a long improvement road in front of her

in one of the stories of edia comming. alabama head coach was following edia and kellie was telling her dad she heard edia was turning down offers.. she wented tess also from one of the stories i read. alabama not top 25 team evevy year. Seen to recalled when their now head coach at texas school made a few ncaa runs. Could see edia geting some backup mins next year . Do not see her forcing shots over other team shot blockers in the post. What little i saw of her on youtube she passes like tess. One year edia might had better 3% than tess. Edia was part greenfeild big three of greenfeild best players with tess and chole do not know how name is spelled. do not know if she defend like miles . but a point guard who hit her passes not force ball in to one player while other team waiting on pass is worth a look.
