Hot off the presses:
hese are tough economic times. In Georgia, our legislature is working
hard to balance the budget. To do this, they are making cuts. Funding
for education is on the chopping block.
There is HOPE. The United States House of Representatives just passed
an Economic Recovery Package that will send more than $4 billion to
Georgia over the next two years. The money will restore state education
cuts to at least the FY 2008 funding level with any remainder sent to
local school districts. This could take the pressure off state and
local education budgets resulting in saved jobs and programs.
The Georgia Association of Educators believes Georgia desperately needs
this aid.
What the more than $4 billion means to Georgia:
61% of the money MUST be spent on education (It's a
federal requirement.)
$336 million will go to Title I Schools
$370 million will go to Special Needs Students---IDEA
$449 million will go to School Modernization and Repair
$566 million will go to Pell Grants
$64 million will go to School Improvement
$31.5 million will go to Education Technology Grants
