short version..

LAS VEGAS (AP)—The celebration of Carl Edwards’ second consecutive victory was short-lived: His winning Ford Fusion failed a post-race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway that could lead to severe penalties for his team.

NASCAR officials discovered the lid was not on the oil tank box of his race-winning car and the parts are going back to North Carolina for further inspection.

Just last month, five Nationwide Series crew chiefs were suspended for six races, fined $15,000 each and their drivers were docked 25 points apiece because their lids were simply loose.

Look to me like it's 15K and 25 points only.

At least, but since others were previously caught and penalized as you list, they might raise the ante to send a message. It has happended before several times.

Seems to me it has to be at least 100 points or Nascar needs to let Robby Gordon win his appeal.

Edwards was lucky they didn't penalize him for the second tire offense yesterday to. That could have cost him the race.

I guess I'll contradict my previous post, NASCAR was fair and corrrect in the tire issue decision IMO.

I saw this on SportsCenter last night. I say they'll go with a 100 point penalty, if it was Robby Gordon they would go with a lifetime ban because he's Robby Gordon.

I would expect 100 to be the penalty, which could cost Edwards getting into the Chase. Any less will only increase the wailing voices supporting Robby Gordon already claiming a bias toward Gordon. If Gordon's violation was inadvertant, how do you justify penalizing Edwards less when his appears to be intentional?

that is the key word. they should nail him for points and take the victory. they should also ban him from doing the dumb backflip, ever again.

PTI had a piece on this. They both agreed the victory should be taken and given to Jr.

Back in the day as they say, that is what would happen, but since they have gone to a policy of whoever the fans see win is going to be the winner even if cheating, it would not be fair to change without some public notice of change in policy. Seems to me NASCAR dosn't give it's own fans much credit to figure out who should win or not.

seems to me, sometimes they don't think their fans are as intelligent as they really are.

That is what I'm saying. Several years ago I remember Helton or Bill France Jr saying they didnt think it was good to confuse the fans by having a different winner in the newspaper Monday morning than the one they saw take the checkered flag. To me that is an insult to the fans.
