So, I started this to talk electrical guitars. My nephew wants an electric guitar, but I don't know if he'll commit to playing it. He played my brother's acoustic wonderfully, and he asked for his own, preferably electric. I saw a brand called Glarry, are these any good?

The reason I asked is because they are 80 dollars, which is a red flag...

Trust the wisdom of the crowds. I take this to mean it is a great deal, tho it's probably not a great guitar. If he plays wonderfully already, IDK why you would be hesitant to invest a little more in the kid, tho, unless money is an issue. It's a pretty pricey gift from an Uncle, but it's unclear if you are buying it or if his Dad is.

Has he taken lessons? Is he experienced with the acoustic? How old is he? What type of music do you anticipate him playing?

There are great deals to be had on gently used instruments. I recent got my son (he's a lefty) a mint condition American Telecaster on Reverb for a little over half what they sell for new.

He's 11, I don't know what music he likes, he is experienced, and his dad teaches him

I'm buying, but he's known to quit things very easily...

Personally, I can't imagine an $80 new guitar being very playable or having decent electronics.

An import Player Strat in excellent condition would run $400-500, which would be a great versatile choice for someone making the move from acoustic. Not ideal for metal, obviously.

I don't know what your budget is, but if that is above your price point, I would consider a Squire Affinity or Yamaha Pacifica ($200-300)

I started with a fake strat (Squire?) and it treated me well

Absolutely. I've played music since I was 6. Started on classical piano, then by ear/modern piano, then electric guitar/ metal, then acoustic, a little drums, and i just started with the banjo. First lesson and online instruction started 2 weeks ago.

Hope he has fun with it. Would love to see what you get him!
