I’m biased, but those 2 are not remotely in the same league. Not even close. John Ward was an artist. Eli had an irritating voice, did call the action well, but wasn’t the easiest to listen to.
His voice seems better suited for NASCAR. I never could really listen to him doing football.

Having been exposed to Mick Hubert for over two decades, Eli Gold might as well be Vin Scully or Keith Jackson.

Interesting rumors coming out of Tuscaloosa, but it’s not worth commenting on. It will come to light soon enough.
I haven't heard any rumors, but if something scandalous it wouldn't be the first time. He was canned from his NASCAR gig after he supposed creeped out/stalked a woman via social media.

How that didn't also have professional repercussions for his Alabama gig, I don't know.

Just curious if you are active on their boards as well as this one? If so, share some of the scuttlebutt from over there!! (I respect you for not spreading unsubstantiated stuff though).

I seem to recall some dust up with social media and Eli sliding up in DM’s of co-eds .

Seriously. Damn I heard him on the radio a few times going through Florida. I figured the Florida fans at least liked him. How in the hell did that guy get that gig?

After being spoiled by John Ward, Eli was fingernails on the chalkboard for me. My Bama friends think he was the John Ward of Bama. No comparison.

John Forney was better than Gold, IMO; and SOUNDED like an Ala announcer should. Forney & Doug Layton; used to listen to them complain about reading the numbers on those "Pale Orange Jerseys". In South Alabama, I couldn't pick up the VOL NETWORK with John Ward & Bill Anderson.

I remember those guys. Golden days of radio. Eli Gold was a downgrade. I was lucky - lived in Alabama, but the Fayetteville station had just enough power to be heard. Sometimes you had to rotate the antenna, as it was spotty coverage. Grew up listening to Ward call basketball with my Dad. He loved those games on the radio. The era of Justice, England, Hann, Boerwinkle, Whidby and others.

Yep! I used to go out in my car/truck at night and listen to Tennessee basketball; and the night football games in September. The car radio was much better at picking up the Vol Network out of Knoxville/Nashville. Still the sound faded in and out. Today's Vol fans have no idea how magic it was listening to John Ward's Tennessee broadcasts . AND the level of OUR dedication. Thank You PT!
