Consumers in dark over risks of new light bulbs

WASHINGTON – Brandy Bridges heard the claims of government officials, environmentalists and retailers like Wal-Mart all pushing the idea of replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving and money-saving compact fluorescent lamps.

So, last month, the Prospect, Maine, resident went out and bought two dozen CFLs and began installing them in her home. One broke. A month later, her daughter's bedroom remains sealed off with plastic like the site of a hazardous materials accident, while Bridges works on a way to pay off a $2,000 estimate by a company specializing in environmentally sound cleanups of the mercury inside the bulb.

With everyone from Al Gore to Wal-Mart to the Environmental Protection Agency promoting CFLs as the greatest thing since, well, the light bulb, consumers have been left in the dark about a problem they will all face eventually – how to get rid of the darn things when they burn out or, worse yet, break.

That company estimated the cleanup cost, conservatively, at $2,000. And, no, her homeowners insurance won't cover the damage.

Since she could not afford the cleanup, Bridges has been forced to seal off her daughter's bedroom with plastic to avoid any dust blowing around. Not even the family pets are permitted in to the bedroom. Her daughter is forced to sleep downstairs in an overcrowded household.
She has continued to call public officials for help – her two U.S. senators included. So far, no one is beating down Bridges' door to help – not even Al Gore, whose Academy Award-winning movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," urges everyone to change to CFLs to save the planet from global warming.

Al Gore should realy stick to being a lawyer. He knows and understands very little about real environmental issues, but he really knows how to scare the heck out of uninformed people.

Problem is Al isn't a lawyer either. Hasn't been anything other than a few years as a reporter for a Nashville newspaper. He attended law school but didn't get a degree.

You guys need to go check out his strip mining operation in Smith County. Real environmental work going on there.

Just another example of the elite in this country telling the little people we need to reduce our footprint here on Earth while they fly around on private jets and in Gore's case make money on a very environmentaly unfriendly industry.

Where have you been?? It's been staggeringly more apparent that this country is do as I say, not as I do and it's been like that for a while now. I blame it on MTV, reality TV, and Britney Spears and Paris Hilton's sex tapes.

I have been fully aware for the past seven or eight years at least.

I started hearing about these mercury concerns a while back...and I have been really surprised there haven't been more reports of these kinds of things....I'm guessing that most people just pick them up and throw them away when they break?

There are warnings on the packaging but lets be honest who here reads the specs on a lightbulb before installing it?

Al Gore is the greatest wish he would run for president. He would be a better choice than what we got now.

Be careful what you wish for. If it wasn't for him we would have no global warming. He invented it. Just like the internet.

I know that has been said several times over the years but can anyone show me where Al Gore said that he "invented the internet"? I know he played a role in getting the internet running and I think that is the extent of what he has claimed.

Just a little ribbing of Al. Don't take it personally. :p He did invent global warming though. Even if he didn't invent the internet.

Oh no, I didn't take it personal and I wasn't trying to sound personal with my response but I have heard that a lot so I was wondering if he had actually said that. I was more curious than anything.

To my knowledge he has not. But it is my understanding that he greatly inflated his role in the process.

from wiki (yeah, I know)

n a March 9, 1999 interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, Gore stated, "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

a little taken out of context but still funny

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in here by offering the opinion that rational thought is no longer part of the environmental debate. A significant number of "environmentalists" are really just people who have deified nature. It is their God, whether they realize it or not. You can no more rationalize with them regarding environmental issues than you can rationalize with a radical Muslim on the subject of religious tolerance.
