Epic Qb Battle 2013

Am I the only one who is completely stoked to see the qb battle we have coming up? I mean I've never seen one so up in the air with seemingly 4 different guys all with a chance to take the reins. I think we've got a pretty darn strong group of guys and the competition will only make each of them better. In fact i think these four guys have the potential to be one of the strongest groups of ut qbs ( across the board mind you) that ive seen. No theres no proven star yet but i think all have that capability. My prediction is peterman starts, Worley transfers and the two freshmen battle for the two spot.

This :good!:

Good prediction on the depth chart but I cant say Im stoked about it. Whoever it is will have a really tough year and lots of growing pains with no proven receivers or running backs and no experience with the offense or starting in the SEC. I really wish we had a cupcake schedule to lessen the agony but Im prepared for multiple blowouts and a maximum of 5 wins.
Not accurate! Justin Worley has started SEC games for us / he will have some time to throw and is also a smart kid
We have two proven running backs and a beast OLine
I agree with you about the WR/TE positions
I am not saying we will have the quick strike offense of last year but I believe we will have a lot of long drives resulting in points

I agree about the Line and rbs. We just need a qb that doesn't lose games for us by trying to do too much.

I agree, there will be less flashiness from the offense this season. I also think the running game will take another step forward. Neal and Lane are good solid running backs. I do not understand the discredit they receive on this board at all. Also, our offensive line was stout last year, and it will be again this year.

The passing game will most likely become more of a quick strike, take-what-the-defense-gives-you kind of thing. The coaches will try to get these guys in space. We have so many good athletes at wide receiver. There is no way that a few of these guys don't emerge. I would say probably, Vincent Dallas, Pig Howard and Marquez North will be the 3 that get the most snaps. But Bowles and Croom both have a ton of potential and this could be their opportunity to play a lot. The receivers are unproven. But there is a lot of promise there. As long as we get the right guy under center throwing them the ball, I think this will become a strength towards the end of the year.

I am pretty excited about our offense. Young and extremely talented players in the skill positions, and a veteran steamtruck of an offensive line to protect them all.

Just gotta fix the defense.

Gotta go back to Copeland, Helton, Manning and Stewart to have that good at depth for QB at Tennessee. As I recall, Copeland and Helton both injured and Manning got his chance. I appreciate Bray's rejection of Kiffin and loyalty to Tennessee and I wish him success but glad he moved on with this group here .... YES competition should be great to watch at QB and WR!!! GBO!!

If our QBs are as good as I believe they will be, I think our WR corps of Croom, Bowles, and Howard are going to make us forget the Hunter-D. Rogers tandem. I think we're going to see Croom-Bowles be very similar to the Hunter-D. Rogers duo and Howard as a more dangerous Z. Rogers. We will be seeing WRs without the attitude problems and a QB who doesn't favor a particular receiver just so he gets his touches. If the OL proves they can run down the field and block during running plays as well as retain their pass blocking prowess, the Vols will be a menace to any team they play.

The key of course will be what kind of defense we field. Safeties and CBs will make or break the season.

I don't think it's gonna take Dobbs long to learn this system. The kid is very very smart. For Dobbs it's gonna be a physical battle adding weight and being able to play in the SEC

This would be a good thread to add a pole to see who everyone thinks will end up winning the starting spot.

How did those starts go for Justin, I forget? I dont remember thinking how smart he was when he stared down receivers like they were runway models.
And those SEC proven running backs must have felt slighted when they were pulled from each and every short yardage situation for a linebacker. How often does Saban pull his proven SEC running backs when he needs a yard or two?
The only thing we have coming back worthy of any praise is the pass blocking ability of our offensive line. Thats it. Nothing else. No other top flight SEC caliper team traits to speak of whatsover.

Look, Butch is a great guy and really works hard to say the right things and portray the right image, but we are SOOO far away from being good its not even funny. Like three or four years away from competing in the East again if everything goes really well....

I agree success is not going to come easily, but people have to lighten up on Worley and stop writing him off because of his starts as a TRUE FRESHMAN against TOP 10 SEC TEAMS. Geez

Pope, what you just said, we have people on here who wouldn't understand it. You could thread it through their rear and pull it out their nose and they'd still not see it.
They're Jerry Springer guests so you know what that's like.

I don't care who starts, but certainly don't think Worley should be given the nod just because he's been here the longest. CBJ needs to start the best of the 4. If its Worley so be it,

Agree with your basic premise that the best qb should start. But no one thinks any of these guys is the next cam or PM so what's the rush with the freshman? Don't write off experience. We will have the biggest and hopefully best OL in the country this year. Having a qb under center that already works well with and is trusted by the line shouldnt be discounted. Worley also has extra strength and conditioning the incoming guys dont....i dont care how in shape these guys are in high school, nothing compares to big time SEC strength and conditioning programs. In addition, Worley has already had his "big eyes, bright lights" moment in front of 100+k people. Sure, some freshman will come in and eat the crowd up, but unless you have just an amazing supporting cast (which we don't) most need time to adjust to playing the Alabamas and LSUs of the world....it's intimidating to a 17 year old kid.

Let's also not forget that CBJ has a short leash- he needs to win NOW. Sacrificing a year or even two to develop whichever true freshman shines (and I'm sure one if them will) is a luxury CBJ does not have if he wants to be here his 4th year of his contract.

Havent seen enough of Pet to comment, but i would imagine it will come down to he and worley at least through october.

Um... Worley has an average, at best, arm and isn't mobile at all. His best attribute is his accuracy and touch on passes.

Weren't Worley's passes clocked at 51mph when he subbed for Bray, who was throwing at 55? Isn't 50 considered NFL strong? His arm did not look average to me. He put the ball where it was supposed to be, when it was supposed to be there. He can throw on a line or go vertical, with accuracy. As for not being mobile, who among the eleven Vols on the field made the tackle after Patterson whiffed on his route and the ball was intercepted? Worley did that. He moved very well, and he laid the wood. I'm not saying that he is a dual threat QB, but neither would I say that he isn't mobile at all. He is a good athlete; he is smart; and he is ready to play. We may see Peterman also, but I think that Worley will be the leader of the 2013 team.

Yeah, sure his pass was clocked that fast. Let's just forget that his throws are noticeably slower.

Erik Ainge tackled someone after an interception too. Would you classify him as mobile? Bray has too, mobile?
