I remember when I was watching Eric Ainge & Brent Shauffer switch in & out, I was thinking to myself how good of a team we was going to have.Eric Ainge was playing like one of the best quarterbacks I have ever seen play in college football. Then there was this year, I dont see how someone that did that good can turn around & suck like he did this year. I was just wondering what some of you think what went wrong with this kid? Anyways I hope next year he plays like we know he can and not like he did this year.

Let's see...He had a shoulder injury that knocked him out of the last four games in 2004. I am not sure whether that is affecting his passing at this point. He had to split practice time with Clausen. He had to split playing time with Clausen. The receiving core generally sucked this year. Sanders, a backup who never got a chance to be the starting QB, felt sympathy to Clausen and let a QB controversy develop, which CPF then allowed to get worse. Personally, I think Sanders is probably the one who wanted Clausen to start and CPF was just backing Randy's call. We all know that Ainge was Phil's boy.

I would also add that Riggs pretty much laid an egg this year and the lack of a running game until Foster got a shot led to a bunch of sacks and hurries.

I think the injury made him gun shy. A friend of mine once had a great blue tick hound hunting dog. The dog was smart and loved the scent and to track game. But he had one big problem. He was scared to death of the sound of a gun. We were shooting one day in our front yard and the dog took off into the house and crawled shaking into a corner.

I think Ainge has a case of the same nerves as that dog. But, his fear is the fear of getting hit and losing another year. He just looked timid out there. He wasn't decisive and controlled.

My dad said it would have been a good idea to take the green jersey off the boy early on and let him get pounded in practice to help him remember how to take a punch.

All the skill in the world is worthless if you are living in fear every time the ball is snapped or the gun fires.

The problem was that we could never pick a team. We spent the year playing spin the bottle and nobody wanted to kiss the winner; by the end of the season, the bottle was smashed across Sander's head, and now they are playing Doctor instead. Dr Shouls, AKA Dr. Cut will now stick his boot up the teams rear and if they don't all cough in unison-perfectly..10 times, well, lets just say they won't be jell'in like a felon.

I agree he's gun shy! He lost his confadence and he didn't have a good coach to develop his skills. He has great talent, but no skills.

No doubt he regressed, but I don't remember him ever playing like one of the best to play college football.

Well to bad Tn lost Brent Shauffer and Eric Ainge was a decent quarterback last season, but prolly wont amount to anything.I agree with Spazzy Phillip Fulmer needs to step up and take some of the Blame like a real man. The only reason Phil is firing his crew is so he wont look bad. Everything is his decision step up and take the blows like Tn did all year.

You guys are off the mark. Last year, all Eric had to do was call the play signalled from the sideline and execute it. This year, he had the added responsibilities of reading the defenses and checking off to a play that would be successful against the defensive formation he saw. This was an overburden on him and he went blank. In sports psychology this is now referred to as the Rick Ankiel Syndrome. His mechanics malfunction were one of the symptoms. This is why Cutcliffe says he'll coach Eric from the shoulders up.

I think when he injured his shoulder he must have hit his head on the turf too. :focus:

I was thinking about this earlier, what if we had Brent this season? Would he pick the offense up with his big plays?

Yet another 2005 What If?

By saying take the blame, what is it that you want Coach Fulmer to say?
Is not saying "It starts with me" taking the blame?
Is trying to fix the problems not taking responsibility?
Is a letter of apology not taking the blame?
What is it you want?

I think Fulmer waited way too long to make the changes and I think this season has been coming for a while. But Fulmer IMO is doing the things he should be doing. Now it is up to him to crack down on disciplinne.

I think Ainge relied mostly on his talent last year. He has a cannon for a arm and he put it to good use early. The receivers also made him look pretty good with some great catches.( Similar to the UK game this year). Now this year he was competing with a senior QB who knew the Offense very well. Eric just didn't handle the pressure. Add the injury to the mix, QB rotation, poor receiving, poor coaching, no running game early and you have a receipe for disaster. Like it or not I think the coaches set him up for failure. Not necessarily on purpose, but by not making solid decisions on who the QB should be. If Fulmer wanted Ainge then Clausen should have been the No.2 guy from the beginning and vice versa. The indecision of the coaching staff all across the offense( not just QB) has hurt this team and Eric Ainge.

Lack of fundamentals and QB coaching happened. Low confidence doesn't help. Should see a turn around Spring practice which get better in the fall.
