Saw this debate on another board. Exactly how good will Erik Ainge be? I mean, he played his first DAY GAME and as an 18 year old Freshmen he already has a fan website. I know the Internet was not big back then, but neither Peyton nor Quincy Carter had a web site. Of course, AJ Suggs did!

Woo hoo! 1st post! (great forum by the way)
Personally I think has potential to be a really special player. I also think it's too early to compare him against Peyton or other quarterbacks just yet. Let him get this season under his belt and see how he handles all the road games, the sec championship and any bowl game we may go to.
We also have to keep in mind that PF still thinks Ainge and Schaeffer are very close talent wise. Brent may well come forward and have a huge game or two himself. I think it would be great.
Besides, if Crompton is as good as people say both of our talented freshman may be riding the bench within two years...

:welcome: and congrats on your first post.

Everyone would agree that Ainge can be a very special player. We also saw how easily the wheels can come off when we played Auburn. Also you have to remember that a QB can only be as good as his surrounding cast. Right now we have a VERY good offensive line, 2 experienced tailbacks, a mutant fullback who looks like he could be all world and a WR core as deep with talent as any I have ever seen. Wonder how good Ainge would have looked on that 2002 team?

Crompton comes in next year, right? If Ainge sticks the season out and kicks some ass, then I'd imagine they'd just red shirt Crompton for a year, then he can get some time in as a freshman and sophomore, then start when Ainge is out and hopefully drafted.

I heard Crompton is now visiting other schools due to PF not choosing a starter.

I say oh well. If he is as good as they say, it should not matter who or how many QBs are playing. He should be able to take the starting position based on his much hyped skills.

Crompton said along he was going to take his visits. But he still wantred to go to Tennessee.

I hope Crompton still comes to Tennessee. Like said above, he could redshirt and then only have 1-2 years on the bench.

Ainge better than Manning? Way to early to say, but Ainge has had the advantage/disadvantage(?) of the offense being much more wide open. When Peyton was a FR, we played very close to the vest, relied on pounding James Stewart behind that stout O-line for most of our offensive production. Since Fulmer grew the cast iron pair over the summer, Ainge has had much more opportunity to lob the ball.

Hard to compare at this point, but Ainge certainly looks dang good. I'm tickled pink he's a VOL.

And I was tickled pink to play ball with him in high school. I really want to come out and see a Tennessee game sometime, though. Plus my auntie and uncle moved to Nashville recently, so I'd have a good excuse to make the drive to Knoxville from there, and hopefully make it into Neyland.

Do it! If at all possible, come to the Alabama or Notre Dame game. If you can't make a game this year, I would suggest Georgia next year. You've got to come for one of the big ones (preferably a night game) so its especially electric, 109,000+ fans, etc. It will be worth the trip...

Then you can spread the word to all of the non-believing PAC 10 fans out there... B)

Trust me, now that our boy is taking snaps for your team, SEC is starting to catch some attention here.

And even though we may be mainly Pac 10 fans... At least we're not the Big East

Ainge vs Manning......

the same comparisons were being made between Clausen and Manning back in 2000. Clausen was good, but never really got any better, whereas Manning improved during his collegiate career.

The verdict on Ainge vs Manning will be out until his collegiate career is closer to completion. :twocents:

I reserve the right to pass judgement till after his sophmore season. I'm sure you have heard of the "Sophmore jynx"

I love this kid to death but let's not get ahead of ourselves or him. There are not many Peyton's that come along in the whole nation, ever. Not only is PM the best we have ever had but he is now without question the best in the NFL. Let's not put any more pressure on EA as fans. Let's pull for and support him but let him mature and enjoy the game. I think that makes a much better player. Being smart, working hard and having talent are important but having fun while doing it is looked over by many. PM has fun while he plays. I like this whole team as they appear to have fun. That is the little magic I think we have been missing the past couple of years.

As for Crompton in the end he will be a VOL most of this crap is coming from writers who want to create news instead of report it. As for him looking around because Fulmer hasn't named a starter is HORSE CRAP since its to his advantage for him that no starter be named and he has plainly stated he is not against a redshirt year IF he cannot win the starting QB job.
As for the Comparison of Ainge and Manning as Freshmen they are about equal and next year if he is still the starter you can compare their Sophomore year and their first 2 years in college. Ainge is a better QB right now than Quincy Carter was as a Senior.

Note that Manning's first start was against Washington State. Todd Helton started the game against Miss State, and left the game early due to a knee injury. Miss State scored the games' final 17 pts to come from behind and win 24-21. The comeback was aided by 4 Tennessee fumbles in the 4th quarter. The loss to Alabama was Manning's only loss in his 8 starts as a freshman.

Re: YAZ

Your comments regarding JC are TOTALLY INCORRECT. I sat next to his parents at the LaTech game. He actually thinks the 2 QB system is awesome and it gives him some hope of working in some PT as a soph. Did you get that...SOPH! He hasn't missed a UT game and loves CPF and CRS....LOVES CPF and CRS. So be careful with those rumors.

I found this on the insiders website if any one is a member they can get the full report.

By Don Callahan
Date: Sep 27, 2004

With the success of the two Tennessee freshmen quarterbacks, David Crompton has decided to look into options for his son, four-star Tennessee commit Jonathan.

Like I Said, if he's as good as they say, he or his daddy should not be worried about existing talent. Let him shop around, if he goes elsewhere, hopefully we play against him and smash him a few times.

Crompton Senior has always said even with the commitment, jc would take his visits. Just some bammers trying to stir the toilet. P.S. notice the ? on the title. I've seen the insiders report as well as several others.

Crompton is not afraid of the competition. Besides I think Schaeffer may be getting his tranfer papers ready anyway.

Here is Inside info on Insiders --- They are very unreliable in the first place and if you don't believe me contact Crompton's MOM and ask her what she thinks of Insiders. His father being a good father is stating that they are keeping their options open for THIER son in case he decides to go elsewhere. If you read all these so called articles there is not 1 statement form Jonathan himself only from someone else and for the most part with Insiders you most likely are not getting the real story. Jonathan Loves UT (Dad loves Clemson), Jonathan Loves CPF and CRS and by reliable accounts is looking forward to being in Knoxville next year. He may very well decide to go elsewhere if he feels he would not get a fair shot and as I have said before and will say again next fall the QB spot will be open to competition whether it be 2 way or 3 way. By the way he has not missed a home game yet!

Hey guys, since we've already selected Ainge as Heismann winner, how long 'till his NFL Hall of Fame induction?

Easy cowboys. One game at a time. He looks good, but remember, Auburn was only 2 weeks ago. . .

Oh, and vol4life, how exactly does it feel to be "tickled pink?" I tried to do that one time in college and got smacked.
