Sorry if information about Erin Gabriel (frosh pitcher from Ohio for the LV softball team) has been previously posted, but I've been unable to get on here very often in the last few weeks. Is Erin still on the team? Seems like she saw very little, if any, action during the last few weeks of the season, even during the non-conference games. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

She was injured all season, they shut her down for good to get it taken care of a few weeks back. Should be ready to go for next season.

They should have redshirted her. Starting her in game 3 against Alabama may have cost us the SEC championship.

she is still eligible for a red-shirt if she didn't appear in a certain % of games the lady vols have played :hi:

I have found the Gabriel situation to be a strange. Was there ever an announcement that she was injured? If so, I never saw it. Has anyone said what the nature of the injury was? I've not seen it. What did she hurt? It's as if she disappeared.

She tore something in her hip and had surgery

That was on purpose, she and her family did not want the details disclosed. Not uncommon in college sports.

on secrecy about injuries. It's dopey. The girl pitched against bama and then it was like she was lost in the Bermuda Triangle--not a word about her.

It used to be that if a player broke his or her arm, the athletic department would say: Jane Fastpitch broke her arm and will be out for the rest of the season. Now there is some strange desire to keep everything secret. Medical privacy laws have tightened...in some cases to the point of silliness. Fans have a right to know why someone is suddenly not playing. I mean, if some personal or sensitive issue is involved, then maybe privacy is warranted. But if it's just a injury, what IS the big deal? In any case, I hope she comes back healthy. If there are any typos in this post, it's because I have a slight issue with one of my hands but I don't want to say anything more--it's secret. And I'm kidding.

Probably the difference in college and pro sports. If the players want it in college, they can be protected under the privacy laws. Most pro leagues require the disclosure of injuries, i.e. the NFL for betting purposes. I am not sure the fans have the right to know of an injury to a college student if that student doesn't want it disclosed.

First of all, she didn't disappear after the Alabama game, she pitched (and won) games against Murray State March 19th and Tennessee State on April 2nd. She had to leave the TSU game early because the injury began to bother her more. The decision was made to shut her down after that.

Second, I completely disagree with you that the fans have a "right" to know about an injury. What gives you that right? If a player is injured or sick or otherwise, that's not any fan's business. The only thing you have a "right" to know about the team is who is playing and what happened in the game. These are real people, not pieces of meat that exist only for your entertainment.

To answer another question in the thread, she is not eligible for a redshirt because she participated in games past the halfway point of the season. To be eligible for a medical redshirt, it's 30% of games, but those games must be confined to the first 30% of the season.

Thanks for the post. Sometimes, fans think they are the coach, physician, and lawyer and have the right to acquire and broadcast any and all information. They are dead wrong.

As some may remember basketball star Chris Lofton played his entire senior season with cancer and no fans knew it -

Correct, it would be a violation of the HIPPA regs which is a Federal felony.
