I think the exact opposite. You commit to the school not the coach. Franklin is a snake

Ridiculous, so if I am a vandy recruit and they bring in this Mason guy in and I absolutely cant stand him, I am stuck at Vandy for 4/5 years? Meanwhile he can leave anytime he wants.

I am very happy for the few recruits who realized Dooley was a complete idiot and decommited from HIM and went and played elsewhere.

Also lets also not forget coaches, including our current ones, who take commits from players then when a better player comes along they convince that player to look elsewhere.

Its a dirty business that allows coaches and recruits to behave like idiots at times.

I didn't see this posted. The article compares the approaches to recruiting used by Dave Clawson at Wake Forest and James Franklin at Penn State. Nice to see Dave Clawson continuing to succeed.

Dave Clawson, James Franklin take different recruiting tactics - ESPN

Players being recruited in the MAC conference--generally speaking--will not be the caliber of player you want at an ACC school. There are always gonna be exceptions--like Roethlisberger and Randy Moss, etc...The point being here that the players Clawson was recruiting to Bowling Green would not HELP Wake Forest.

I don't like or really care for Franklin, but he does deserve his props for what he accomplished at Vanderbilt--and everyone knew that it was only a matter of time before he received an opportunity to coach at a really good program who has the $$$ to invest in FB.

And--he is right...relationships between players and coaches SHOULD be the determinant factor--and by the way--our OWN coaches have said the same thing--recruiting is in building RELATIONSHIPS and making guys comfortable with the COACHES. And if you really don't think so--ask yourself why we lost out on so many recruits when CDD was here.

It does help when you have an Institution that INVESTS in its FB program--but remember--there's a reason CBJ can market UT's great tradition in FB:

The administration went out and hired General Neyland! And he set about the business of investing in people and building relationships.

Why?

Because as a military man--he knew that when the crap hits the fan--people FIGHT and DIE for their brother in the foxhole next to them! (Band of Brothers, Lone Survivor, etc...etc...) However--the guys in the trenches don't want to be led by incompetent and inexperienced men (see CDD).

As I see it--the only real question is: Did Franklin violate some unwritten or written CODE when he invited Vandy recruits to Penn State?

If you say yes--then you must ask yourself why you were so overjoyed (like me) when Michael Sawyers and JaShon Robertson signed with UT.

Why bring Dooley into this? This board is worse than a girl trying to get over the guy she lost her virginity to. Dooley had nothing to do with this conversation, at all, why even mention him?

First, I will mention him whenever I want.
Second, I thought it was a great firsthand example of recruits leaving because they didnt want to play for an idiot.
A poster stated he thought recruits commit to a school not a coach, i pointed out if a recruit doesnt like a guy, example being Dooley, then they shouldnt have to play for him.
Everybody here is familiar with Dooley so I used him.
If you are this aggravated about it check my history and you will see that I never mention the guy,

I have to disagree. I signed to play baseball because of a combination of the program, coaching staff, and school itself. There were coaching changes during and after my freshman year, and I was not a fan of the guy that took over (he sucked and was fired a couple years later, so my gut was right on that one, haha), and while I liked the program and school as a whole, having a coaching staff I liked and respected was more important to me developing as a player. I immediately transferred.

If those same coaching changes had happened the summer before my freshman year, I would not have gone there at all. Even though things didn't work out for me there, I still hold that program and school in high regard - things just weren't right for me to stay there.

You just have to put yourself in the shoes of these players who de-commit/transfer due to coaching changes. Fan of the school or not, sometimes going in a different direction is in your best interest.

I always kind of thought Clawson got a raw deal here. The problems here during his time were not his fault. Hope he is successful at Wake. JMO

And Franklin is still a douchebag.
