"Coach Who Should Take The Bus To Work:

Tennessee's Phil Fulmer (38). Not only did the Volunteers' fourth straight loss, at Notre Dame, let down an entire state, it let down an entire conference. SEC loyalists were stubbornly insisting that the league's low scores were less a product of inept offense than of superior defense. The Fighting Irish scored 27 offensive points and 41 all told on the Vols, pretty much terminating defense as a defense for the stultifying play in the SEC. (And by the way, Phil: Your quarterback situation is still a mess.) "

Boy, that just makes my day. :banghead:

By the way, ESPN is also reporting early that the Tenn-Vandy matchup will determine who goes to the Music City Bowl.....

Been a long time since the Vols lost to Vandy and UK in the same season. Think it goes back either to the 70's or 80's. Would have to look it up in one of my books. UT has only lost to Memphis once-hopefully not this year and neither to Vandy or UK. Vols need to hold opponents to less than 21 to win and put over 24 on the board. :cross:

I think Memphis will also be alot tougher than everyone thinks, we'll beat Kentucky by 20, but Memphis and Vandy will be close

We can't win in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama....all of those neighbors. We have two chances to defend our rights in our home state AND beat a neighbor state besides Mississippi. God help us....

If you've ever lived outside the state of tennessee and had an opportunity to hear what other people think of Fulmer's coaching ability and his program, its usually not favorable. The comments generally run along the same vein, he has lots of talent but can't produce results.

That's not very good insight by the ESPN crew regarding our defense.

Notre Dame scored points this way:

7 punt return for TD
7 INT return for TD
3 INT return to 34-yd line
3 punt return to 20-yd line
7 fumbled kick off return on 27-yd line
7 73-yard pass on 3rd down and 10 off an illegal pick play

That's 34 points either directly or indirectly off of Tennessee mistakes. That's also 80 yards off of the total offense of ND when you eliminate the illegal pick play that would be called 95% of the time. The pick play, which was the momentum changer, was blatantly illegal and would have negated that TD because it was 3rd down. Then TN would have had the ball with good field position and driving to go ahead. Who knows.

They also did not point out the following

"It was little consolation for defensive coach Chavis or anybody on the Vols' hard-luck defense. They held Notre Dame's high-powered offense to 343 total yards, the second-fewest for the Irish this season. They were held to 244 yards against Michigan."

That includes only 48 yards rushing. Which I believe is also a season low for Notre Dame.

I was going to make the same point, not very good analysis by someone paid to be a "sports analyst." :disappointed:

I expect nothing less from ESPN. I never saw them beat down Penn State like that. But then again, I pay little attention to thier comments.

It was also one of Weis' first games as their coach when they played Michigan.

343 - illegal pick play drive = 263 yds total offense

Now, I will say that they got after our defense a little when they had the chance to score. They hit multiple big thrid down plays and had a 95 yard drive. But this 41 points thing is ridiculous.

Gave up almost 300 yds. in the air. Not exactly a good defense. Chavis chokes against a great offense!!

I wouldn't call that performance choking. He held one of the best offenses in the country to under 350 yards, and that includes the 80 yards on that PATHETIC PICK PLAY.

It wasn't our BEST effort. But it was pretty good aside from 3 or 4 plays. Obviously our 3rd and long defense has got some issues.

We held them to under 50 yards rushing!

another good point oklavol. i have lived in kentucky, ohio and arizona and could not find one person who thought fulmer was a great coach. the best i could do is in arizona, some fans for ASU said he may be alittle better than average. in ohio they laugh at him because they know the truth he's not very good. they laugh because they used to have john cooper.
