The 25 most important players in 2023's College Football Playoff race
The 25 most important players in 2023's College Football Playoff race

1. QB Joe Milton III, Tennessee
It couldn't be anyone else. Milton gets a third chance to become a star after misfiring at Michigan in 2020 and Tennessee in 2021, and whether he succeeds or fails -- whether Tennessee becomes a potential Georgia or Alabama spoiler or an outright SEC favorite -- we'll know why

I think we're learning Cooper Mays is EVEN MORE important...than Joe...

It cant be helped. He is the unknown. I think most of the coaches out there know that Heupel is not a flash in the pan, his system is very dangerous. The question is do we have the tools this year to do it. If Joe is on target, with an Oline who can give the receivers time to get downfield, the Milkman can deliver to the end of the field almost at any time. Thats really really hard to defend against. And when you try, then its oh so easy to start gashing you on the run because everyone took off downfield.

If Milton is consistent, we are back to 60+ scoring and no matter who you are, that is hard to beat, even if our Defense is just meh (and it might actually be OK this year)

I do think Nico has the ability to step in for Milton and not miss a beat if not improve if Milton doesn’t work out. We will have our answer by the UF game. The Virginia and Austin Peay should give both QB’s ample enough opportunities to see who is the best for the type of offense we run.

Dave Hooker doesn't think they beat Florida without him. If that's the case, they miss a bowl. I've been really concerned but I don't think he costs them the entire season if he's out a bunch, unless it's because it's just too much for this new OL to handle.

I think the fact that ESPN was all behind Tennessee last year and came to Rockytop twice says plenty. Fowler probably hates us, but he is old news. We still have some wildcards and Milton is one of them. Yet they are still giving him praise and putting us at 11. I don’t think ranking Clemson ahead of us is a slight. It’s really about projected wins, and we could easily drop 3 this season and have a much more challenging road than Clemson does. So, that’s plenty of love for me, considering we are coming into a season with a QB that has had many more bad games than he has had good games. I do hope he puts it altogether for himself and of course the players, coaches and fans. If Milton shines this year, it will be a great story for CFB.

Whaaat ??? We can make 7 wins and a bowl with 3rd Qb Gaston Moore, not that it should come to that. I am thankful we have Joe, Nico, and Gaston. But I do hope Nico gets a few reps in both of those first 2 games.

I was replying to someone who was talking about the importance of Cooper.

I think it’s because Milton’s ceiling is so high…while his floor is so low.

He has the arm talent to go #1 in the draft. But he’s already flamed out twice, and could be on the bench by the third game.

The intrigue cannot be denied.

Milton is the biggest "boom or bust" name in the sport this coming season.

If he's great, Tennessee will be in the playoffs.
If he's good, Tennessee will be a threat to make the playoffs.
If he's average, Tennessee will miss the playoffs.

It's, look, it might seem unfair, but a whole lot of this is on his shoulders and the college football world is holding its breath to see what he'll do.

I think if Heupel can get Milton right, he is going to become legendary as the "Quarterback whisperer". First Hooker, then Milton - then Nico. Every top QB will be fighting to get in here under him. Considering he is one of the few HCs who was a Heisman runner up and NC winning QB, its not completely surprising - but very welcome.

Milton is the type of guy they want to be giddy over. If he fails they get to make fun of Tenn. It's a win win for them.
No question about it being a win win...if he flops, they'll ignore they were part of the hype. Personally speaking, I like my odds w/ JH in charge and think chances are better than worse that Milton will have a really good year. On the flip side, it's about the QB, but is also on a larger scale about personnel and RBs. I guess if we became a run dominant team it wouldn't matter either way...as long as we're scoring and winning. Again, I like our chances alot. JH track record below...
