ESPN preseason rankings

How the eff do you rate Florida at all? I mean they could turn out decent, and end up in the top 25, but they dont deserve to start there.

I wish we were ranked lower just because I always prefer to earn it, and we dont see to do well when ranked highly.

Correct on both counts. Neither UF nor UT has enough proven commodities at key positions to place them as high as both are placed.

Georgia and penn state are bush wack disney talking points.
I actually agree about Ped State.

ESPN loves them because they only lost to two really good teams, and play in the Big 10. They lost to those two teams by a combined 37 points. And those were the only two good teams they played during the season. And they only beat Utah after Utahs starting qb went out.

Perhaps but you can make a case for UT in the top ten. Major contributors returning to a team that soundly beat the ACC champs.

If I understand it correctly, SP+ rankings are based on Bill Connelly's formula that includes values for previous recruiting, returning production, records from several preceding seasons, and maybe others. It's not really a top 25 prediction like the poll rankings. He plugs in the data and this was the output. It has more value as a marketing tool for ESPN than as a prognostic indicator, IMO.

It's probably me just splitting hairs but I would say that's more a "rating" than a ranking.

You have a good point though and maybe I was just reading into it too much. It just seems a strange thing to me to do that type of a "rating" but not have it tied to a prediction or expected Performance.

I mean I guess it's a true "this is what they SHOULD be", and not "this is what I think they will do". I think Bamawriter has done a good job showing the flaws of just riding a formula.

Just a quick reminder that preseason rankings aren't that useful for predicting the season. Sure, the usual suspects will be near the top and end near the top but anything below 7 or 8 is a BS guess.

ESPN unveils SP+ preseason projections for 2022 college football season
Yikes, 7 or their teams didnt end up ranked. Several more were off by a goodly margin. They generally overestimated their top 25 teams, by an AVERAGE of 11 spots. That's mostly due to a number of them dropping off the face of the earth. TAMU, miami, Cincinnati, BYU, Auburn, kentucky, NC state, all dropped more than 20 spots. You had a couple more in the high teens.

That's the reason they call it the off season. Anyone who thinks they can make predictions about the season right now is off.

They brought in a really good QB transfer from NC St. But A'M at #17 is ridiculous. Also we all know Texas will not finish in the top 10.

Texas A&M may be overrated, but it's not so unrealistic as to be ridiculous IMO. They lost multiple close games in 22 and return a lot of production and talent. Improved QB play could put them in the top 25. Gonna be interesting to watch the return of Petrino to the SEC.

And they play us next year. That guarantees they will end up being pretty good.
