ESPN Profit Plummets As Network Turns Left

It was mostly a rhetorical question. Anyone could see putting politics into a sports network was a terrible idea from the get go. People watch sports to get away from the pig pen that is politics.
When you're in a compromised position, you'll do things you wouldn't normally do. ESPN absolutely would not (and did not) insert politics into their programming in the mid 90s. No incentive to. They weren't going to F up a great thing they had going.

However, in the mid 2010s, they didn't have a great thing going. SportsCenter is irrelevant, as are lots of the other non-live sports stuff. The ratings for those shows were already lagging, people are cutting the cord and streaming, etc. How do you spice it up and make it relevant again? It led them to do dumb stuff.

I still think Gameday is good. I think Herbstreit is the best in the business and does a great of being objective and fair. You guys can give me crap, but I really like Corso.

It was a very stupid idea that only hurt them more. The problem was the people in charge either wouldn’t listen or didn’t want to

Because it had to have a significant financial impact on them before they would elect to reverse their position on increased political discourse.

My guess is advertisers looked at the Nielsen ratings and starting decreasing their advertising spends on ESPN, and finally red flags were sent up by the bean counters.
Easy on the bean counters, often we point out bad business decisions and sometimes morons believe they know better. The numbers on financial statements will eventually catch up to their great idea and implementation plans.

You don't need SportsCenter when you can just look on the ESPN or CBS Sports websites

That’s why the opinion makers got big money. SportsCenter at once upon a time was appointment TV with Dan Patrick and Olberman and a lot of those guys. Then they had a reality show to who would be the next anchor, and everything kind of turned into a joke. PTI is still good and SVP too.

they are a 'diverse' company...yeah, as long as you agree with their beliefs..otherwise you are a hater, bigot, or homophobe

There would be more games on CBS, ABC (maybe) and NBC just as in the olden days!

You are remembering olden that I don't recall. The networks showed 1 game. There weren't that many games on TV back in the 70's-early 90's.

Yeah, the olden days for me was that one game on ABC every Saturday with Keith Jackson. Some weekends we were treated to a doubleheader with a west coast team (usually USC).
