They are all pissed about it and I think that's funny. ESPN forums are the worst!

There is no chance that Freak does this with VolNation, correct? I would be sad. I know they've had problem with pm's recently and now the servers this morning but I would take VN being down 3 days a week over being powered by ESPN. That's how much I dislike the ESPN forums. Pretty sure WeAreSC started affiliated with ESPN as well. That's why I'm asking if this is a possibility in the future. I hope not.

Wow, that site is turrible, lol. Anyone that complains gets posts deleted/banned.

Similar situations have come up already, rest assured that freak won't cede control of the board.

The Red Cedar Message Board (michigan state) was at Spartantailgate.com for many years. It was a vBulletin site just as VN is. And it was HUGE.

Problem they had there is that the vBulletin was no longer being supported. ESPN was not a good match anymore, (too many constraints), and 247sports came along and made an offer that couldnt be refused I guess.

Since they made the change to 247 they have had GREAT upgrades in news out of practices, recruiting news went through the roof. Great place to get info, and great writers giving the info.

But it lost some of the personal appeal by not having the vBulleting formatting. Pictures are hard to see. gif's are barely viewable at all, taking a LOT of the fun away from some subjects. And the MultiQuote feature doesnt exist. The list is long.

Someday, Freak is probably going to have to make a decision about whether to scrap the vBulletin format and go to something else. It will be a sad day.

Hopefully this place works out for a long time. I like this format much better.

And then you had to bring all this up :( lol

I really hope this site stays as is for a long time. Minor changes to upgrade of course when they see fit. But the forums are perfect as is.

I've checked out a lot of other forums seeing what fans have to say and their forums suck compared to this. ESPN forums suck in general

tRCMB kept the same basic set up with the forums. and they flow just about the same. But we lost some of the things that made the old one great.

One thing I miss is the ability to report a post. The mods try to keep things clean, but they cant see everything. And here in the Coach Summit thread yesterday, i didnt hesitate to hit the report button. I like having the ability to keep the jerks under control.

We also had the ability to post Polls on vBulletin and lost that with the switch.

Overall I would say it was a good move. We lost a TON of schticks in the move, but that means we also lost some good entertainment.

Seriously, if there is a time when VN is forced to do something different, 247Sports is a pretty good PlanB

VN is an ESPN affiliate already. It says it at the top of the banner.

I know. And that's what I'm saying.

WeAreSC was a "ESPN affiliate".

Now WeAreSC is "powered by ESPN".

Their site is directly integrated into ESPN's system. They use the same forums and same sn/password. It looks just like ESPN with the college sports articles off to the side. They are basically ESPN Dallas, ESPN Boston, etc. They are no longer an affiliate. They are part of ESPN and it's awful imo. Mainly because ESPN's forums are awful.

I remember being a regular poster on espn during the mid 2000's talking to guys like skeeter and utorangemen and others. I quit posting when trolling became unbearable. Come to think of it, I don't know why I wasted my time on espn boards.

Version 4 is radioactive, but I've never heard of any reason why anybody has to move off of version 3. Lots of forums still use it. I just looked it up, and a maintenance release for vBulletin 3 was released a few months ago. I wonder if your Sparty board may have sold you guys a bill of goods as to why they were making the $witch.

There are several other nice options for forum software out there, free ones even. Not sure why just about every other site sucks so bad when there are lots of better options. But I don't see any reason to change from vBulletin, it seems to work just fine.

It was part of the reason, but there were others.

One thing was that the board was so big that it was becoming a fulltime job for the owner of the site to maintain, and the fulltime job that actually paid his bills was starting to be affected by the full time job that brought in zero money.

So with 247sports he has fulltime support from the site. He also has writers that are paid for by the site, and not out of his own pocket. Great writers, btw. The coverage of MSU sports has never been better.

anyways, Im a big fan of the vBulletin setup. But I think the overall package at 247 is a better deal.

If I were VN, I would stick with the way things are, as long as the owner of the site has the time and finances to keep things going. But, if there was a day when VN is looking to head a different direction, I would stay as far away from ESPN and anything else like it, and head to 247sports.

It looks like you have pretty good control of things here on VN. That was one thing that was starting to go bad on us over at tRCMB. We had troll and schtick issues that were hard to keep up with. It was a full time job just chasing them around the board.

the new board, while it has its disadvantages, has freed things up for the site owner and mods, and cleared up the schticks quite a bit. they are still there, but not as bad as the vBulletin board. And being friends with a few of the mods, I know that their lives are made easier by the software change. Schticks are easier to spot, and get rid of.

I do miss the "report post" option. I think that is what I miss the most. And the ability to post polls, and the way that Pictures are in the actual Post. At 247 they come in below the post, and you have to select them to see the full pic. kind of clunky.

Anyways, you have a good thing here, I hope it doesnt change.
