The Lady Vols have three players who have been listed by a panel of judges at EspnW as one of the top 5 at their respective positions. They are Bashaara Graves, Izzy Harrison and Meighan Simmons. As an interesting note Mercedes Russell picked up one vote from a member of the panel as well.

The exciting thing is that Jordan Reynolds is gonna be a super player as well. No doubt in my mind she has All American status in her future.

displaying the maturity to win the games in doubt.

putting the ball in the basket during tough games - who will be the leader, the player with the ball in her hands when the team needs that final basket? Seldom is that a post player.

Similarly, getting the defensive stop, especially against dribble drives is the other essential to win games that haven't been won in recent years.

Massengale should be on the top 5 list as a PG. She has the skills and physique, no doubt; what she has lacked is what Simmons has lacked (and spani last year, too)--the mental toughness to play well in big games; to assert herself when it counts. They both came up small last year in nearly all the biggest games--poor defense, poor shooting. That has to change this year if the Vols aim to make a serious run.

Wow! Homerism at its best. Massengale has been a huge disappointment. It's also hard to understand why Simmons was on anyone's AA list. She has skills, but they rarely show up, particularly when they're needed most.

I agree with most of this. I wouldn't say Massengale has been a huge disappointment but I would say she hasn't been what everyone thought when Pat named her the starting PG before stepping foot on campus. A disappointment, yes, but huge, no. Carter is by far the best PG. Massengale is better at the 2. What can you say about Simmons. She can take over a game at times but when she is off the team is better with her on the bench. She tries to win the game by herself. The game with MT was a good example. We played better when she wasn't in the game. It's not her skills that fail her, it's her emotions and mindset. She needs some of Butch's "snap and clear" between the ears.

For anyone disappointed in Ariel, I think your memory is pretty short. Since Bobbit left in 2008, we have struggled and struggled @ point guard. Kinna wasn't the answer. Bass wasn't the answer. Simmons wasn't the answer. Countless others weren't the answer. Ariel comes in as a Freshman and she IS the answer. I've had no problems with her and I'm thrilled to have her. I'm not sure what else she should be doing. I'm glad to have Carter, too, though.

we know that the guards are the players who carry teams at tourney time. Massengale needs to continue to become better - she needs to play as a senior level - not her freshmen ups and downs.
