Going over in about a month. Usually I just get the global rate for the phone so I can use it as needed but this time I'm probably getting some sort of data plan. Two options:1. data thru Verizon. Problem is that its expensive. Plus I have 3 others that will be bouncing off my hot spot. The other options is to buy a sim card there.

The second option intrigues me. Does anyone have any experience getting and using a sim card in Europe. I'd like to get advice and hear what they say before going over blind and trying to do it.

I'm currently in Italy and can't get squat with Verizon even though I signed up for both the global calling and data plan. Fortunately, I get WiFi in my room.

where's I'm going I'll have coverage. Been there before and used the cell with no problem. I keep reading about buying the sim card and its much, much cheaper

Verizon phones are unlocked for international use. Buy a sim when you get there. Or, if you know someone living there, have them order you a giffgaff or similar sim card.

Only problem is you might have to change some settings to get MMS/SMS/Data working. If you buy it there, the rep will be able to help or their website will have instructions.

If I do it this will the phone number be affected?
My option here would be getting the sim for my sons phone and using it as the hot spot keeping my phone for phone calls and text

you could always buy a burner when you get there and use it locally and just use your current phone whenever you have wifi.
