even the pac 12 refs are terrible.

Easily a catch and he ran beside the guy on that punt return. Awful

That wasn't a catch. If he woulda kept the ball high, it woulda been. But when he tried to drag it down across his face mask, he bobbled it when his left foot touch out of bounds

It never left his left hand. Even the Bama fans said bad call.

It didn't need to leave his hand. You have to secure it, and it was moving around. He never secured the ball until he was out of bounds.

The punt interference was a bad call, though. But ND's first TD came thanks to the refs calling a guy in who wasn't, so it kinda washes.

In a 28 point beatdown the refs would have to be a hell of a lot worse than that to be a story.

Just watched this play a couple of times, and I was wrong.

When Jones called for the fair catch, Notre Dame was not allowed to touch the ball until it hit the ground. The ND defender did just that.

Now, I don't know if that's what the ref saw happen, because the head official wasn't specific when he ruled kick catch interference. If the call was running into the kicker, then that would have been incorrect, but they still would have called a penalty that definitely occurred.

The uncalled pass interference on 3rd and 2 on the play before the punt interference call didn't help ND either. The Bama player never played the ball and made contact with the ND player before the ball got there, and it affected his ability to make the catch. That's basically the definition of PI, and it happened right in front of an official.

This is something I am not clear on. I have not seen a replay to check for this, but I thought it was a live ball as soon as the receiving team touched it. I am not saying you're wrong. I have just never had that part of the rule explained to me. I've never heard anyone say the ball has to also touch the ground.

If Jones had not called for the fair catch, the ball would have been live at the moment he touched it. However, when you call for a fair catch, you are allowed to bobble it or juggle it. It does not become live until the ball touches the ground. I'm not sure the ND player could have avoided touching the ball, but it doesn't matter.

That explanation of the rule makes sense.
I wonder if it matters if the Bama player is deemed to have pushed/bumped the ND player into the ball.

A block in the back could have been called, but it still would have been Bama's ball minus 10 yards.
