It never left his left hand. Even the Bama fans said bad call.
The punt interference was a bad call, though. But ND's first TD came thanks to the refs calling a guy in who wasn't, so it kinda washes.
Just watched this play a couple of times, and I was wrong.
When Jones called for the fair catch, Notre Dame was not allowed to touch the ball until it hit the ground. The ND defender did just that.
Now, I don't know if that's what the ref saw happen, because the head official wasn't specific when he ruled kick catch interference. If the call was running into the kicker, then that would have been incorrect, but they still would have called a penalty that definitely occurred.
This is something I am not clear on. I have not seen a replay to check for this, but I thought it was a live ball as soon as the receiving team touched it. I am not saying you're wrong. I have just never had that part of the rule explained to me. I've never heard anyone say the ball has to also touch the ground.
If Jones had not called for the fair catch, the ball would have been live at the moment he touched it. However, when you call for a fair catch, you are allowed to bobble it or juggle it. It does not become live until the ball touches the ground. I'm not sure the ND player could have avoided touching the ball, but it doesn't matter.
