Ever gone to a game with a rival fan?

By coincidence, I shared an apt with a UF guy while living in Seattle. After moving back East, I met more of his fellow alums and have stayed good friends with them for years.

We all got together for the 06 game here in Neyland and sat in the UF section. UT lost a tight one 20-21. Anyway, during the game some guy behind me was dropping f-bombs and a Gator fan a few rows down turned around, saw my orange shirt and must have just figured it had to be me since ALL UF fans are soooo classy. Ironically, he was so offended by the vulgarity that he started dropping a few himself and making threats along with his buddies. At one point, I invited them up to my row to discuss further. As far as they could see, it was just me and another Gator fan so they figured 3-2 odds were looking pretty good. They were clearing a path our direction when our 3rd buddy returned from the crapper. The one that just happened to play D line for UF under Spurrier. He was 2nd string but the guy was/is still a a very large man. He politely asked if any of them wanted his mullet caved in by his SEC championship ring (which was larger than a fun-sized Snickers.) As soon as he started to stand up, they turned around, sat down, and shut up until they slinked out of there 10 mins later. Just to show they weren't scared, they did lob a few last threats but only when they were right by the exit and able to make a quick retreat if needed.

The moral of the story......it doesn't matter who you go to a game with as long as they're your friends. Secondly, it helps if that friend is a 6'5" 265 former player of the opposing team.

A bammer friend took me to the 98' game at Neyland w free tix. That thing was close. Shaun Alexander was a beast. When Price housed that kickoff return, he started laughing and clapping when the flag was laying on the field and the place went silent. When the ref called wedge busting on Bama it was sheer joy. Poor guy picked the wrong cycle to get freebies to the UT game. Went with him in 96, when Jay Graham took that 70+ yard game winner to the house too.

Why don't you go to the Bama game with this guy EVERY year?????

Went to the Oregon game with my best buddy who was born and raised in Oregon. He wore his Ducks gear and pulled for Oregon. I wore my Tennessee gear and pulled for the Vols. He got a little obnoxious once or twice, but it was cool. I wouldn't worry about it.

Heh...yeah that doesn't hurt. My Oregon buddy is a cop, so I had that going for me as an outnumbered fan in enemy territory. Nothing as interesting as your story happened, though.

All the time. Oklahoma, UT, and UK fans are all together in my family watching football sometimes. A few Louisville fans but we all ignore them.

Having a rival fan around is generally fun.

I used to watch UT games on T.V. with a few of my buddies sometimes, some of which did consist of Alabama fans.

Let's just say that didn't last too long.

Who takes a dump at a football stadium?

Went with a friend who is a Bama fan to the '09 game in Bryant-Denny. The car ride home was quite miserable.

So my old roommate is an Auburn grad and just as much an AU fan as I am UT. He is coming up for the game and we'll be going/sitting together. We have had this planned for months.

For some reason, I haven't thought about the awkwardness that naturally will manifest around kickoff. I've been to games with all kinds of different people, but they were all wearing orange.

Has anybody ever done this? How is it going to work? One of us will have to be disappointed when the clock hits 0:00. Will I be a jerk for celebrating and high-5ing when North catches a TD? Should I restrain myself? Just don't know the proper manners in this situation.....

I did this exact thing a few years ago when we played Auburn. He cheered for his team (albeit a little quiter) and I cheered for mine. The only awkward moment came when we entered the gate. A loud drunk Vol fan started getting in his face and he has a bit of a temper. He looked at me with wide open eyes like, "I'm not sure how much of that I'm going to take." Luckily I got the drunk to chill. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to hit another Vol that day.

I never actually bothered to verify just what transpired in the crapper, I was just glad to see him back. Odds are good it was to piss and mix a drink (done as 2 completely separate actions.)

I have gone to a game with rival fans, but - unlike you, my experience was on accident...

On a Saturday several years ago, while working for a real-estate company in Gatlinburg, I walked down Airport Rd to get some lunch.

On my way back I noticed a lady and her daughter wearing USCe shirts. I asked the lady if they were in-town for the UT v. USCar game and she said yes. Then she said her husband had gotten sick and they were not going to make it.

I told her I would by her tickets - 3/$120.

I left work and headed home. After making a few calls, I finally got my brother-in-law to go with me.

I threw on some orange and picked him up. So we make it to Neyland, wearing all orange, and ask the usher for seat directions. I believe the tickets were ZZ, endzone tickets, only a few rows off the feild.

Suddenly, I realized that I never even considered where the seats would be and anxiety built every step we took closer to the USCaro fans/student seating.

In a sea of black, we were the only orange for at least 20 rows in all directions.

3-4 drunk SC fans were immediately behind us and an older USCaro couple below us.

They weren't so bad, even somewhat cordial and good sports. They seemed to be even nicer as the game progressed and it looked like UT would lose.

Then the momentum shifted and UT began to roll. We threw a touchdown pass in the corner of the end-zone and the good-nature drained from the USCaro fans in an instant.

We ended up catching some very stiff knees to the back and 'accidental' jack&coke splashes on our necks and backs. Our shirts had so much alcohol on them I thought we'd get a skin contact drunk buzz.

We went on to win that game and escape the USCaro fans seating section with minimal damage.

Looking back on the experience, I wouldn't change a thing. It was so nice to be among the fans who were getting beat down by our Vols.

I'll check and see if I can find some reference to the game I am talking about. I think it was around '01-'03, home v. South Carolina and we had an incredible catch in the corner of the north end-zone.

Was it in the dry about 40 rows up in the corner of the endzone? I very possibly could be the drunk you are referring to! Lol I almost got into it with an AU fan in 09 near the beginning of the game!

Yes, but he was a pseudo fan. His Dad was Pat Dye's head coach in HS. He was a bandwagon fan while Dye was coaching.

Went to UGA game with good friend back in 2001. Vols lost in last minute in the infamous "hobnail boot" game called by Munson. It was a blast and we had a great time for all by the last minute of the game.

Neyland was extremely LOUD when Travis Stephens took that screen pass down the sideline for what seemed to be the winning score.

I was more mad at the squib kick at the end of the game--NEVER will understand why we just didn't kick it deep instead of squibbing it and giving it to them almost at midfield. Also remember our DB just missing an INT by a fraction of a second on that last UGA drive...

Only had one idiot fan yell at my friend as we left.:salute:

I go to the UGA game every year with a Dawg fan. I go to the SC game every year with a Carolina fan. Never had a problem in 15 years or so of doing it.

I go to the games with a rival fan almost every week. I buy two extra season tix every year and those two seats are for out of town guests. I have friends from every fan base you can think of, and when their team comes to Neyland, they get invited to Knoxville for the weekend. They are our guests at the tailgate and we (generally) get along fine during the game. It's a good opportunity for me to catch up with old friends in a fun environment.

Yeah, it sucks when UT loses to their team. Been to Auburn 2003 and then again in 2004 with a buddy of mine who is a Aubie fan, believe he will have to find his own way to this game. Go Big Orange!

It was at gate 21 while we waited to get in.
