Bruce has really done an excellent job correcting some of the weaknesses that was part of his coaching...

1. The half-court offense has fluidity this year. Not only that, it has put our players in the best position to make a play.

2. Half-court defense has greatly improved in all aspects.

3. We can now play a successful half-court game, yet still be able to get out and run on some occasions.

4. Most importantly, ability to adjust both offensively and defensively in the game.

Pearl still has his flaws, but he has done an excellent job this year. By far, the best job he has done so far.

Congrats Coach Pearl, and let's keep going with a strong run. :hi:

I have been following Tennessee basketball for 45 years, and Bruce Pearl is by far the best coach we have had. Ray Mears did a terrific job in putting UT basketball on the map, but he never won an NCAA tournament game, and we had some very good teams in that tournament. This is not a knock on Mears; he was a first-rate coach, but Pearl does seem to do a better job of coaching in big games.

However, there is one caveat. During Mears' tenure, only in his last two years, 1976 and 1977, were more than one team invited from the SEC to play in the NCAA tournament. However, had the current rules been in effect (a 65-team tournament), I suspect UT would have been in the Big Dance more than five years in a row when Mears was coaching.

One thing I appreciate about Pearl is that he brought Mears and Bernard King back into the fold. The basketball alums really appreciate what Pearl has done, and I can see why. For all of the off-court stuff that happened when he was here, King played at only one speed when he wore the Orange Jersey: Full Speed. I never saw him have a bad game, and I never saw him quit. It really is good to have him back and being in touch with the team.

I have no idea how this team will do, as consistency has not been its greatest strength. However, I believe we need to appreciate what has happened and to recognize this team for what it has accomplished this season.

Fantastic post, and nice to hear the perspective from a long-time fan. Go Vols!

Those were some really nice times. But, can't mentions Mears without Stu.

You guys do realize that if we don't at least make it to the Elite 8 there will be hell to pay on this board calling for Bruce's head, some folks just don't realize how hard it is to advance in this tourney.

I also noted the ones that will call for his head are no where to be found at this time. They are just waiting on that lost to pounce!!!!!!!!!!

exactly. I hear more people bash Pearl on this site than on a freaking UK site. I think Pearl's a fine coach, probably the finest Tennessee's ever had. And don't overlook the fact that he's got a top 5 recruiting class coming in next year as well.

People have called me crazy, and probably still will. But i do believe that the Tennessee Vols will advance to multiple final fours during Pearl's time here. I hope he stays for a good while.

I can't imagine anyone bashing Pearl on the job he's done this year after getting this team to the Sweet 16. Anything from this point forward is gravy.

the half court offense is better at times with good motion and ball movement... but it's still very very inconsistent... remember the SECT games versus LSU and UK? the half-court offense was pretty shakey against sdsu as well.

the half-court D has been mostly much much better than last year... especially the last month.

i hope we can play a good half-court game for 40 minutes in our next game. we'll have to for a win. i'm sure our next opponent well be a little better than sdsu and ohio u.

We are definitely playing a much better halfcourt game on both ends of the court now than we have at any other time during Pearl's tenure. He has adapted our style of player to the players' abilities nicely.

I'd love to finally see us get over the Sweet 16 hump, but its still a great season if we don't.

+1 Bruce has done a great job. And for those constantly saying that Jay Wright is a better coach than CBP, just how did Nova do yesterday? Oh, they lost to who?? St. Mary's? Nice. I think I'll take Bruce over any other coach in the country at this point.. Go Vols!

The best coach UT has had since Ray Mear!

Of course he is, but consider the coaches since Mears. Devoe (who couldn't recruit or win in the SEC with his own recruits), Wade Houston (enough said), Jerry Green (anyone ever hear of Jerry Green), and the other Doug Dickey hire, Buzz (Opie) Peterson. Not exactly a sterling group of coaches, which reflects the judgment of Doug Dickey.

Except Bruce lost to Witchita State in the second round once. :ermm:

Lord, those pants.

Indeed, a UT basketball game at that time was a real show, including the kids running up and down the court with signs that quoted John Ward, "Bottom!" and "Zip!"

However, beyond the hype and showmanship, Mears and Stu Aberdeen could flat-out coach. I'm just glad that CBP recognized Mears' real contribution to the university and to our basketball program.

As for Don Devoe, don't forget that we won the SEC tournament in his first year (and have not won it since), and his first four teams went to the NCAA tournament. He was not a bad coach, but he was a poor recruiter, and that ultimately was his downfall.

I haven't really seen many on this board calling for CBP's head. I think quite a few have been critical over the years, and many have said they would rather have someone else as coach. That being said, most of those same posters are hopeful (I think) that CBP will prove them wrong and lead us on a very deep tourney run. I think that a Final Four appearance would do a lot to unify the fan base.
