After Fulmer's "The Perfect Storm" excuse for 2005, I wasn't very surprised when, after the Akansas debacle, he went into a rant about the bad luck of losing his "two best players" (meaning Ainge and Coker) before the meat of the schedule. Thus, implying we would have won those games with both being healthy.

Couple of points coach: 1) I didn't hear Bob Stoops whining when he lost his starting QB before the season or his Heisman candidate tailback early in this season; 2) If Coker was such an impact player, why was it not until the fifth game of the year that he cracked the starting lineup?

Also, I've heard Fulmer's excuse this year that we are "young". IMO, we are losing lately because of the defense and offensive line, but look at the starters here:
Defense: 5 seniors, 4 juniors, 2 sophomores
Offensive line: 2 seniors, 2 redshirt sophs, 1 redshirt frosh

Not like Ole Miss with 19 freshmen or RS freshman logging significant time or Bama playing true freshmen in the starting offensive line.

The title of the thread sums it up. It is just excuses. The question is when will UT get tired of hearing them. Judging by most of the fans on this site drinking his koolaid, the answer is not soon.

That true freshman playing for Alabama is probably better than 70% of the upperclass offensive linemen in the nation.

a little perspective..if i may. and i'm not a fan of using injuries as an excuse either, they are a part of the game. but losing two, really 4 guys that were impact players did have an effect. i digress...
1. And bob stoops isn't winning the big 12 this year either. anybody think that not having Adrian Peterson is not a big blow to that team? and we'll never know about the qb. whether bob stoops acknowledges how the injuries affect his team, doesn't make them any less noticeable or true to fans/media/coaches.
2. Coker was not in the starting lineup at the beginning of the year because he had shown the propensity for fumbling the football during pre season camps. If you remember, the coaches came out from the very beginning and said they were going to put people in the game that would take care of the football. AS he got better in practice, his PT picked up.

And as far as the "young" comment is concerned, i think, and it was a poor choice of words maybe, he was referring to overall experience. that is not in question. the group we put up front on both sides of the ball have been inexperienced, regardless of actualy age or tenure with the program.

the issues with this team after a two game losing streak 10 games in to the season are no different than they were before game one. Offensive line had/still has big question marks and the defensive front 7 wound up replacing all 7 starters when Harrell went down for the season. Inexperience on that side of the ball was known. and Chavis was very vocal, from what my memory tells me, about that and that the LB's were very talented and some of the fastest LB's he's coached. All they lacked was experience. they were expecting some growing pains up front.

and so were most of us...

OK, so as the season went on, and we kept winning, our expectations adjusted. and they should have. but now after 10 games, we are the team most of us thought we would be before the season started.

in retrospect after watching all the games and most of our opponents games, we have won the games we should have, won 1 game we maybe might not have and lost to the teams that have turned out to just be better than us this year. it's not great. but it's just not all that bad either. it'd be a lot different if we had to endure another season like last year. we didn't. we are noticeably better in some areas and some areas still need work. It just shouldn't be that much of a surprise honestly.

Jake, you should be Fulmer's press agent. Most of could understand your cerebral analysis of the season rather than some phony excuse.

Could be worse, you could have that homo Tommy Tubberville as a head coach. I'd take fat face Phil any ole day over TT.

:birgits_giggle: yeah...i've just come to expect to have read between the lines so to speak when fulmer speaks. that's his biggest problme imo, he leaves too much to interpretation...when truthfully i think he's just trying to say it like it is or how he see's it...it just comes out all...well you know how...

the guy's not an idiot...he just sounds like one sometimes. and believe me...sometimes we he starts talking, i have to remind myself not to listen.

He's not a open mouth insert foot kind of guy like chuck amato or john l. smith mind you...he just says things sometimes that make you go "hm?".

Fulmer's not an idiot. He may not be the greatest football coach ever or give the greatest interview ever, but he's not a moron. I mean, he managed to hold onto his job after several subpar seasons and last year's debacle. Some other coaches might not have been able to survive that.
