Expectations way too high!!

Expectations were set when we did not know Mizzou and Aub are legit top 10 teams. Expectations change based on performance. Would be nice to take another shot at Fla now. We just lack speed on D and inexperience at QB.

That is part of it. There was also perceived drastic improvement against SC and GA.

In reality GA and SC were beat up when we played them, and were much better match ups up front. Even then, GA moved the ball at will.

The two things that truly disappoint me is the offensive play calling (all season), and the fact that our DL has completely disappeared over these past two games.

It seemed like we put a whole lot more in the UGA game even after we got down. Their injuries coupled with us making a few breaks go our way gave us a chance to close the game out. We ended up losing to a better QB.

We caught USC at the perfect time after a positive effort against UGA and a week off.

The offensive play calling has left a lot to be desired as a whole. He seemed to come up with some good stuff against UGA but overall (as you have said many times) your left trying to figure out what exactly we are trying to accomplish.

The OL needed to be great and it has been just ok most of the year.

I don't know if we have a great QB on the roster right now, but I have seen enough out of Dobbs to feel more comfortable in the future. If Ferguson has come along (injury excluded) as well as some claim we should have enough competition to push both of those guys going forward.

The program needs to be cleansed of the past. Sometimes that requires the old to be totally removed and replaced with the new. You just hope your able to covert a few in between and cut down on some of the rebuild time.

Rant....
I think way to many people are down on the Team, players and coaches alike.
The whole argument about having dooley, kiffen talent is a stupid self defeating thing to say. The argument that the coaches are not teaching the players and it being all on them is also self defeating.
We do have some talent, and they are not beaing coached in a way that benifits the team.
That being said, its not lack of coaching. It is lack of time.
There were many bad habits that have been ingrained into our talent pool.
Those bad habbits have to be uncoached, before the proper techniques can be fully coached.
It takes time to pick up a new system on both sides of the ball.
My biggest concern is effort. They will get better.
The O line has hurt us since the Fl game. They have lost a step and are not playing as a team. They are making silly mistakes, and are selling out on gimmick plays.
The D line has not been the same without Mo in there to help direct them. They are getting pulled and opening up the run way to much. They need to get off blocks faster and persue.
The secondary... Im not even going there.
There is some blame for the coaching effort, but the lack of effort is on the players mostly. I do hope they are showing more effort in practices. It would be nice to see it on the field. To tackle, tackle, and tackle some more.
I honestly think many of these things will turn around with more time to learn.
Learning on the job is not a good way to learn the things that are needed.
I am ready to see a coach pull a watterboy and run on the field and tackle the opponent. Yeah, he would get ejected, but maybe that would be a teaching moment.

Yes, I am a bipolar fan today...
Lolz
Saying to many people crit the team, then crit the team.
I am just that frustrated about the lack of tackling and effort.
I should have likely not posted at all...

Guys we're just not that good..The oregon, alabama, and auburn games have showed us this...We had a emotional first home game because Butch,an the people had the team believers that their the team thats gonna bring Tennessee back on top!..The south carolina game was a emotional game also because they were determined to get that first win..this shows me that this team does have heart people but they just cant compete week n an week out with those teams just yet, this years class looks to be giving this team some depth an maybe even some future stars for the vols so be patient guys we'll be back soon my friends!! :peace2::peace2::peace2:

I've said this before, but I think your entire argument is a strawman. Your post addresses expectations. Well what exactly do you mean by expectations. Is 6-6 unrealistic?
Scenario. I think you could have two Vol fans discussing the team. One is criticizing the team and the other defending the team. Then you ask them, based on the circumstances, what is a decent record for this team. I think both would answer 6-6. So what is the rub??

The difference too me is not in the W-L but in how the team has competed the last three weeks. They look as bad as they did last year under Sunseri. Lost in space.
Also, I see very little being done on offense to help the team. They ran a screen on Saturday that went for a nice gain. Where has that been? And where was it the rest of the day?
The team has looked poorly coached. How many times have we seen a completely outmanned team come in and frustrate a superior talented team with a well executed scheme? It happens all the time.
If UT played Oregon, Auburn and Bama 10 times, they'd lose 10 of them. But scheme and execution do matter. Stanford evidenced this. The difference is that there talent was good enough to win. UT's talent could only minimize the damage.

Yes, UT has a talent issue, but it is still better than many teams who fair much better against superior teams.
So please understand, criticism of the Mizzou and Auburn games is not an indication that any of us actually expected UT to win those games. I do expect them not to look like the keystone cops on special teams.

it's more that people allowed their initial predictions to drift upwards as the season began. It happens every year. In the spring/early summer most were trying to count the 6 wins so we could get to a bowl. As the summer wore on a fall approached the numbers started drifting to 7-8-9 wins and how we could get there. Now that reality has set in people are disappointed because they allowed themselves to believe this team was better than what they saw last year and in the spring. As I said, happens every single season

Not really. Everyone expected pretty much what we've got and expected an upset somewhere either Ga Auburn or SC and got it. What everone is dissapointed about is the way we've been blown out and how lopsided the losses are.

People need to learn the difference between a "hope" and an "expectation"

I hope I never see UT give up 444 rushing yards again…I also expect that a Butch Jones coached UT team will never give up 444 rushing yards again.

You are going to get all kinds of responses from fans when something like that happens. Just the way it is.
