For the life of me, can anyone tell me why Mike Sweeney is making $11M/year???

You are pretty dead on with your assessment. Also, since Sweeney signed his $11M/year contract, the Royals have watched as Beltran, Berroa, Randa, and Astacio (Randa and Astacio are All-Stars compared to the Royals current lineup) left for more money from other clubs.I had no idea Sweeney was making that much. Wow. I would guess it's because he strung a few pretty good seasons together a few years ago right before his contract was up. As I remember, he hit for a pretty nice average, drew some walks, had a little power. I suppose the Royals thought it would be a terrible PR move to let him walk, so they threw money at him to lock him up. Hasn't he had a bad back ever since?
Now they're paying something like 20% of their payroll for a guy who can't hit, can't play the field, and can't play a full year. It's hard to be competitive that way.
Dont the Royals have an extremely good rookie at third base this year? You are pretty dead on with your assessment. Also, during the majority of this time period, Pujols only raked in $12M/season.
Because right now Gordon is barely batting above .100. He has the potential, however, by the time he fills it out he will be well away from the Royals organization. Randa was a lifetime .290 hitter (All-Star compared to Gordon.)how was Randa an all star compared to him then?
alright, thanks for clearing that up. i knew he was supposed to be really good, i just havent been keeping up with him.Because right now Gordon is barely batting above .100. I see Gordon probably getting hot in July and finishing the season batting around .250-.260.
