So Obama's deficit reduction plan is being sold as having the "rich" pay their "fair share".

Honestly, I don't have a problem with changing some of the tax rates at the upper end a bit or modifying how hedge fund managers report their income but this "fair share" stuff drives me nuts.

Could someone please define "fair share" for me?

This year, households making more than $1 million will pay an average of 29.1 percent of their income in federal taxes, including income taxes and payroll taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will pay 15 percent of their income in federal taxes.

Lower-income households will pay less.

News Headlines

Obama saying poor pay larger percentage is flat out lie. Its one thing to argue rich should be paying more, but you shouldn't be able to lie to make your point.

Be comical if a rich person would file a defamation suit against Obama. Wouldn't go anywhere but would make great headlines.

To some people as long as "they are getting theirs" it would matter not if it meant raping nuns and burning puppies alive. Convince them it's coming from the "haves" (even if it's really not the "have a lots") and it becomes something they figure they actually deserve.

class warfare is all he has ever had and is all he has ever really made a stand upon. He's the perfect picture of representative democracy dying when vote buying becomes the rule.

which I just don't understand. The media is silent, the people don't seem to care and when someone does say something they're shouted down as racist, elitist, etc.

What has to happen for this man's statements to actually be scrutinized and his feet held to the fire? Just very frustrating

We need to raise taxes on the millionaires and billionaires who make over $200,000 a year.

More frustrating is that even if the media does call him out (see vols4sure's post and FACT CHECK: Are rich taxed less than secretaries? - Yahoo! News) it never seems to matter. How that is...I'm not sure.

Even better. We should tax those greedy, fat cats at 100%! It's not fair that these millionaires and billionaires flaunt their $50,000 a year salaries at us working Joes. After they pay their fair share they won't be so smug in their corporate jets, dining on champagne and caviar.

Terms such as "first" and "last" ; particularly "dead last" damage self-esteem and should be banned. The official term is "participant" although even that puts pressure on people and probably should be softened.

The notion of "fairness" is very weird to me. I read that there is no direct translation for the word "fair" in any other language of the world. Other languages have words for "equality" and "justice", but there is no word for "fairness" (in the "equality of outcome" sense that we use).
