In many places if a man and woman have premarital sex and are discovered local custom gives their family a couple of options. 1. They can stone the woman for being a harlot. 2. They can accuse the man of rape and force him to marry the woman. It is highly probable that "rape" in this case does not mean the same as it means in our culture.

The marriage contract calls for a certain amount of valuable goods to exchange hands, cattle and land in this case goes to the woman's father and her dowry would go to the new husband. In their world view, anything else would be immoral.

Who are we to judge?

In our country a man and a woman can divorce and the woman would get a monthly stipend, a house, cars and the kids, while the man would get nothing in the deal, even if the woman was an adulterer. They would call that arrangement foolish and us crazy for perpetuating it.
