What exactly did he do wrong? It isn't like he's some 4th generation immigrant who's only 10 percent Italian. Maybe if the US actually took an interest in him before he had been overseas for 6 years, they may have had a chance at keeping him. He had the choice to play for a country that he descends from, which is arguably the best soccer nation in Europe, or play for a country where soccer is the 5th option and which he wasn't given an option to play for until he was 19.
