I realize that the season is not even half over,
but this team is beginning to be one of my favorites.
And it’s not always because of Ws and Ls, but that
certainly factors in.
Thinking back just off the top of my
head, and in chronological order, some of my favorites were :
1965. Dickeys second year. Just one loss and that was by a single point.
1967. SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.
1970. 11-1. Battle inherited a Gold Mine.
1985. SEC CHAMPIONSHIP and the unforgettable Sugar Bowl.
1989. 11-1. SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.
1998. PERFECTION !

Sugar Vols are my favorite. That was a great year to be a freshman on the Hill.

2021 BaseVols gives them a run for their money.

Good list. I'm only old enough to remember the last 3 but I've read about the others.

Its a shame the 95-97 teams couldn't beat Florida. They were loaded and deserve more recognition but it is what it is. The 2001 team was our last great team; they were a lot of fun to watch other than the second half of the SECCG.

I hope that 20 years from now we are looking at this 2022 team as the one that started another great run of success and returns us to the conversation of all time top 10 programs - and I think its highly possible if not likely because I believe Heupel is the next great innovator.

95-98 will always be my favorites.

Win Saturday and keep winning and this one will be my new favorite.

Gotta say even though they didn’t win a championship, 1992 team was one of my favorites. Great to watch with an upset win at UGA (presumed preseason national champs) and crushing FLA at home in a downpour. Heath Shuler lit it on fire those games and our defense was blue collar tough with JJ Surlas, Todd Kelly, Reggie Ingram, etc.

I first remember the 85 Vols, but didn't really pay much attention.

'89- my first year really paying attention. Cotton Picking Vols. Went to the Cotton Bowl and watched Chuck Webb run wild.

'92- Shuler.

'95- Manning

'98- Al Wilson and perfection

These were my early favorites. I love those teams and the memories.

1985 team
9–1-2 ties I 🤔 think
so energetic so fun played so hard!

The Sugar Bowl vs Miami was just special!

Started tracking it closely in ‘89, so there’s a fondness for the Andy Kelly years. But nearly all are fondly memorable, outside of 2011-12 and 2017,19,20.

98 is the clear favorite.

95 was one half away from an SECCG and playing the Huskers.

92 was a lot like 16. Started out great, didn't end that well. But the Georgia and Florida games were fun.

90 was the first year I really remember. That Bama game though...

01. Beating Florida and Michigan was nice.

15/16. Yeah, I'm breaking the rules and combining these two. As tough as those losses were from beginning of 15 until Bama wore us out in 16, it was a fun ride. From Bama on in 16, it was trash.

97. We won the SEC, but we made that game harder than it should have been. Then the Orange bowl happened....

I'll go against the grain here and say 2021
We were expected to be hot garbage.
I had no expectations entering the season

We ended up a heckuva lot better than me or most people thought. Possibly the first time in UT football history that a team has exceeded my expectations

Most of all, I had fun. We hung 50-60 on some teams early and got a bit of steam about us. The Ole Miss game last year was one of my favorite experiences as a Vol fan. Yes we lost, but it was weird and unusual and zany-and well, Tennessee football distilled into a spectacle.

Sometimes the best thing about football is being able to simply watch a game without all the stresses. What happens, happens.
