On this day back in 1913 the 16th Amendment to our Constitution was ratified, granting "Congress the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration". :bad:
The founding fathers prohibited the federal government from taxing income and this amendment was sold using class envy, it was to tax those evil rich people that were not paying their share. Once the fed got their foot in the door with this one, income tax percentages proceeded to increase and were followed by the Social Security tax on income and the Medicare tax on income. IMHO, with the power to tax income, the federal government got the upper hand on the states and the citizens, a process which began during the Civil War, but was further advanced by this amendment.
On the plus side, on this day back in 1870, the 15th Amendment was ratified, stating that "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude". :good!:
