According to financial records from the Fiesta Bowl, UConn incurred $4.3 million in expenses, while receiving a payout from the Big East of $2.5 million for making it to the prestigious Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game against Oklahoma.

The largest burden for the school was ticket costs, as the athletic department was forced to absorb a nearly $3 million charge for unused tickets. The Fiesta Bowl allotted UConn 17,500 tickets, but the athletic department only sold 2,771 of them and had to pay for the rest.

In addition, the cost of traveling to Glendale, Ariz.., for the game totaled $685,195, while UConn also spent a total of $460,941 on meals and lodging for the team, administrators, cheerleaders and the band.

Putting the university on the hook for a ticket allotment is a shady move, most people I know that went got tickets from brokers for 25%-50% of what the university was on the hook for per seat.

UConn got a cut of what the brokers sold the tickets for. The total loss was not as reported I suspect. UConn is probably just trying to shame thier boosters into writing some checks.

That just plain sucks......another reason the Big (L)East shouldn't be an AQ conference

I think the conference should be the one shouldering the shame. Isn't the payout for the BCS bowls around $15 million? The team in the game shouldn't lose money while the other schools sitting on their asses gets a cut.

The good news for the Sooners is that any of their unsold tickets are picked up by the Big 12 Conference.
But the Huskies won’t be so lucky. The Big East does not carry the same policy. Meaning UConn would have to fit the bill for what is now roughly $2.5 million in unsold tickets.

If College Football would stop letting the Bowls themselves run the show, the schools would stop losing money like this.

I would love if our team were so good that we, as fans, became apathetic toward the Fiesta Bowl

The BCS format makes all of the bowls irrelevant except the title game. If there was some sort of bowl playoff in place each game would have a great deal more interest and importance.

If we got an At Large to the Fiesta Bowl next year, we'd sell out our allotment in about .3 minutes. Great teams' fanbases seem to become lethargic with anything less than perfection. I wish we had to worry about that issue.

With TCUs move to The Big Least, UConn won't have to worry about ticket allotments to BCS games any longer. The Frogs with an enrollment of under 9,000 will show them how it's done.

they should have to pay for it.. they didn't deserve to be there anyways.

This is true. I just thought it was odd that a school lost money in a BCS bowl since one of the positives people give for keeping the bowl system in tact is the money schools get

The Big Least schools should be required to help UConn eat the loss on tickets as they would have shared in the profits IMO. From what I understand though is the majority of teams that lose money on the deal have vastly overspent on the sideshow that acompanies the bowl week.

Most conferences pick up unsold tickets, the Big East does not. So the other schools got their 1/8 share, and UConn is left holding the bag. More or less, every school in the conference made out well besides the one who actually made the trip.

The Mountain West with Boise, BYU, Utah and TCU would have been a much better option as a BCS Conference...better bowl opponents who would sale their allotment of tickets. A Boise vs OU rematch in the Fiesta would have played better with OU fans and to a national aduience.
