Was it a penalty

I obviously said no. I always thought it was close and maybe Sharpe had interfered with him and then I saw it up close and Sharpe did absolutely nothing while the ball was in the air. People argue it was holding, but all contact before that seemed pretty incidental, and both guys were touching each other. I just think both Gamble and the official choked.

Gotta love the ref's story of how he "replayed it in his mind to confirm his call." That was his explanation for the delay in throwing the flag.

That call is college football's version of the '72 Olympic Basketball Gold Medal Game.

Also have to love him letting the other official change the call and not have him do anything about it. People argue it was holding. The call was pass interference. It shows how confident that ref was if he just let the other official change his mind like that. Rick Reilly did a great article on that.

It would have been a tough call on the field, but replay should pretty clearly show there was no pass interference. The video does seem to be correct about the facemask, but that's not what was called.

I think his hand may have touched his face mask, but it didn't seem like Gamble's face or helmet even moved... I'm pretty sure he didnt' grab it or anything. In slow motion the it seems like his hand was up there for a while, when even Gamble didn't seem to notice. He just tried to come up with some excuse for the obvious dropped ball.

And all this time I have wondered why I disliked Gamble so much..

One of the worst calls in a big spot in college football history.

It is part of the Holy Trinity Of Awful College Football Officiating, joined in that pantheon by Colorado being given 5 downs at Missouri in '90 and the multitude of idiocies in the OU-Oregon game last season.

...and the way you know it's a bad call is to just watch who did and didn't throw the flag. The flag came in - very late - from the back judge. Yet the Head Linesman who basically spent the entire play 15 feet or less from the receiver and cornerback didn't see fit to throw a flag.

How did they not notice the ball wasn't in the pile, and an Oklahoma player had it?

I'm not sure what is harder to believe, a team getting 5 downs, or a team illegally touching a ball on an onside kick, not even recovering it, having the call right on the field, and then overturning it after perfect angles in slow motion.

I think it is probably tantamount to this call...

I counted up to 3 Mississippi after the play was over... then the yellow laundry comes flying out of Yuma or somewhere...

It doesn't compare to the 72 olympics or even that Oakland/NE game...
....it was bad timing, not a horrible call
