Final D1 baseball poll

For those of you that read the baseball posts fairly often, you might have seen my post about the Baseball America poll after the College World Series in 2001. Tennessee lost to Miami (eventual National Champion) twice, eliminated Georgia 19-2, eliminated USC 10-2. Miami won a lopsided championship 12-1 over Stanford. According to the crowd consensus as well as the actual CWS results, Tennessee demonstrated they were the only team at that CWS able to even compete with Miami. The final Baseball America poll had Tennessee ranked 8, below both Georgia and USC. I immediately fired off an email to Baseball America who were quick to dismiss my opinion because "you can't ignore what happened in the regular season". Georgia did sweep Tennessee in Athens that year. They had no response to my reply that Tennessee did not get swept by USC, Tulane, Stanford, Nebraska, or Cal State Fullerton who were all ranked ahead of the Vols in their final poll. I can understand ranking Stanford higher, but I pointed out that they were ignoring what happened at the CWS in their final rankings. Yes, I am STILL a little salty about that one. I was at that CWS and it was clear to everyone there in the stands that Tennessee was the second best team in the CWS that year. Lots of Nebraska fans agreed. Tennessee was the team everyone started cheering for after Nebraska was eliminated.

Final D1Baseball Top-25
  1. LSU (54-17)
  2. Florida (54-17)
  3. Wake Forest (54-12)
  4. Stanford (44-20)
  5. TCU (44-24)
  6. Virginia (50-15)
  7. Tennessee (44-22)
  8. Oral Roberts (52-14)
  9. Southern Miss (46-20)
  10. Alabama (43-21)
There is no case for Stanford being at #4. UT beat them and eliminated them as well with their ACE on the mound for that game. TCU and Virginia was in a weak bracket in Omaha.

The saga continues; American sportswriters have issues with Tennessee. It is UT against the world, D. White has arrived and is making an immediate impact within College Sports. The sportswriters or sports television no longer care who has demonstrated to be the better team, they are bought and paid for by universities/colleges. It is no longer based on the W/L records and strength of schedules. The bias continues to grow. The SEC has dominated the major sports in W/L, SOS, and $$$$$. Alumni for the PAC10, B10, B12 (or whatever they are called now), and the rest are tired of the SEC taking home the trophies. The last thing they need is for UT to rise to the top and be another force to "deal with" in football.

Look at the ACC; UT beat the snot out of their best team with its second string. Josh Heupel has come in and is now another SEC coach capable of beating Bama and UGA. The ADs at the other schools are not happy, CJH almost made it to the CFP in less than two years.

The creditability of sportswriters has diminished; there is no fair and balanced analysis; one only has to listen to the sportscasters during the Orange Bowl and hear them rattle on about Clemson until they realize UT was the better team.

Fans know who are the better teams, we might not like them, but we know, unlike the sportswriters.

Go Vols!

Meh. We should be #4. If what happens at the CWS isn't supposed to matter, why does the winner of it all get to be #1? They weren't #1 in the regular season.

Hey folks, please face the facts of life. If you are not the number one team, no one really cares about numbers 2-99. Does it matter who was the second highest vote getter in the last election? No, they lost fair and maybe not so fair. Simple fact is second place is the first loser. Who was runner up in the last job promotion at work? Did they get a raise? Or do they simply work smarter and harder and be the next in line?

There were some last year on here that argued the regular season was more important than how we fared at the CWS. Now we have decent showing at CWS and pretty good regular season and end up in the Top Ten. You’re still not content.

If you want to be the man, beat the man. Nature Boy was the man for a long time. We are not there yet. Recruit better, coach smarter, practice harder on the mental and physical side of baseball and we will inch our way there. Sports writers do not coach or play the game. Why not? Because most were never good enough to play beyond Little League or Rec ball. Let’s celebrate another great year for Vols and Lady Vols play on the diamond. Stop moaning and crying about where we finish. If a boxer knocks out his opponent then there is no dispute who won. Is it a coincidence that WON and ONE sound alike? If you want to be number one, maybe you should have won the final game.

We have big time programs on The Hill and whiny fans looking for an excuse. Grow up and support our programs with donations and contributions to the athletic department. DW is turning the entire system in right direction. Be happy we are getting there, quickly. God forbid we don’t win ten games this football season. Some of y’all will have a stroke. If you want to act like a Bammer, then I’m sure Dollar General store will sell you a shirt. They were pretty quiet before Saban turned the ship. And look at the entire system over there now. They are pretty good across board. Give the Vols time to turn the ship. GO VOLS. ITS GREAT TO BE A TN VOL.

I appreciate your sobering reminder to the fans, but recruits don't want to come to a team that ranks 99th.

D1 appears to be the outlier among the final polls. The coaches got it right:

Tennessee position in final college baseball polls:

USA Today Coaches Poll: No. 4
Baseball America: No. 5
Perfect Game: No. 5
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association: No. 5
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper: No. 6
D1Baseball: No. 7

Throw out the low and the high, and we have a weighted average of 5 +/-.

The polls are meaningless to me as long as all the teams that advanced to Omaha are guaranteed 1-8 in the final rankings.
Last year Tennessee was the clear #1 team all season but ended #9. That team losing one series any week would have dropped 1 or 2 spots at the most.

Yeah, I see us more in the #5 spot. What a great year though. Looking for next year for the "Everything" school :)
