This morning, a lot of people jumping on the crowd at the memorial service. No one is being critical of the organizers or the speakers -- even Fox said Obama looked surprised but adapted well to the tone. Still, I think everyone last night was bewildered by it.
I've had a chance to think about it, and have a few thoughts. Want to see if anyone agrees with me.
First, because it was on the U of A campus, I am wondering if up in the rafters maybe it was primarily college students, and not mourners close to the families or victims. Having said that, I'm not saying their reaction wasn't sincere. Just saying maybe they did not have the same sense of solemnity those down on the floor had, at least to start.
Second, once the folks in the rafters did take that tone, I wonder if the people on the floor simply decided that what had happened is that the memorial had gone from mourning, to basically defiance against the violence. So, instead of focusing on the sadness of losing the nine year old, it became about celebrating the actions of those who helped the victims.
I don't know. Still seemed odd. But I'm watching it on tv and maybe the people there just collectively crossed some threshold to make it less about being sad about the loss and more about moving forward.
