"I think Josh Heupel has earned the reputation, in my mind, as the best play caller in the country," added Heupel. "And he’s not doing this with Heisman Trophy winning candidates. He turned a guy into a Heisman Trophy candidate, but that’s not what he got when it all started.”
I know there are a lot of folks out there who dismiss Finebaum -- which usually just means they don't agree with one of his takes -- but there's no doubt that he helps drive the narratives that make college football (specifically in the SEC) so interesting on a year-round basis. It's a big deal when he calls Heupel the best play caller in the country. It's not only great for recruiting, but it also gives fans confidence that offense will never be an issue at Tennessee as long as Heupel is at the helm.
Opposing fans will almost certainly disagree with Finebaum. There will be Ohio State fans who feel like Ryan Day deserves that title. Or USC fans who make an argument for Lincoln Riley. Texas fans could even throw out Steve Sarkisian's names. But according to Finebaum, the best play caller in college football resides in Knoxville.

He can suck a big en. He’s on whoever is hot. Should have jumped on the Heup train when it left the station. Ain’t no brakes on the Heup train baby!
I’m sorry but Ryan Day is Mark Richt at Ohio State. They play one game and he manages to lose it. With the talent he has there and the schedule he should have a title by now. He’s scheming with more talent than the opposition in all games till he gets to the playoffs.View attachment 564339

What kills me about the Schiano thing is all the "Tennessee could have had Schiano instead" as if he has done something at Rutgers. They were lucky to get three of their four wins last season and this year, they could very well win one game. The man has been 3-6, 5-8, and 4-8 with an L in the Gator Bowl on a 5-win season.Anybody who thought running off Schiano was a bad idea doesn’t have much sense. Falls into the broken click category. Like you said, he’s on whoever is hot.
My main problem with him is his style which I can only presume is intentional to attract his particular "audience"... easily the most ignorant sounding people assembled into one group I can think of.View attachment 564339
