azz cheeks has set a way too high entrance standard for our gravy train...football. Hell even Vandy has lowered its standards, Booger man wants us to be the Princeton of the south...not ever going to happen. We can not catch the big SEC dogs in recruiting in any mens sport with another sissy working the AD like Hamilton or Cheeks. I listen to Tony B's station on Saturday mornings. They speak plainly unlike the other shill stations. And they voiced this same comment. Higher standards than most SEC schools=less butts in seats and less money due to piss poor performance because you can not make an even playing field in recruiting/hire dollar tree coaches and give (not entitlement) $6 bigs a year to academia more than most schools in div I. CBJ has his hands tied somewhat because of this. I am not a Dr of sports management this is just what they said and IMHO only. Please discuss and peace.

Oh goodie ... another thread to do away with academics.

BULL$HIT! Academic standards are part of life at a university. If a kid wants to play football, he should learn to study or accept the fact that he may have to go to JUCO.

We have season tickets since TBA opened. That money pays for everthing that athlete needs. They "take" nothing from academia my money needs to stay in athletics
The plain speaking comment was also JMHO and I apologize if I misrepresented that
and Cheeks is an ass

Well i understand that the football gives back alot of money. Do like Alabama just give a million a year of what football takes in and see how fast Cheek lowers it. And you are right. Franklin at Vandy knew they would have to lower the standards to get in school. Now look at Vandy 9 or 10 wins this year. If Cheek does not do this then send his sorry azz packing down the road.

National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges
we are 8th of sec schools 101st overall........8th...about where our football/basketball and baseball currently reside. Rickey you are right turn down the tap. And I would add that extra money every year from now till hell freezes over to building foundations in winning by demanding top coaches in all sports as they come open not laying more foundations in concrete. And I do not wish ill will to CBJ/CCM or Serano.

I'll say this in regards to your comments I don't donate every year so Tennessee can compete in some bullsh@t academic bowl. I say if a kid qualifies with the NCAA and sec then they should be admitted, cheeks standards for athletes being admitted is far above those that the NCAA and sec require now that is bullsh@t

Keep your donation and buy a clue. The UTAD came under Cheek in the summer of 2010. Our slide in football began with the 2nd half of the 2001 SECCG.

Our standards for football athletes are no higher than anybody else in the SEC. Maybe we SHOULD raise our standards - we were dead last in the conference in the latest Academic Progress Report.

Apparently, chemical engineering doesn't teach punctuation. That and the kind of person that puts their GPA on a football forum has the credibility of my Golden Retriever.

Close the school and just keep the football team and the cheerleaders! School is too much of a distraction for the players IMHO.

Nice to see the passion, OP. The posters speaking against leveling the playing field are the ignorant ones. They forget that the current UT administration that is driving UT to top 25 research status are doing so against the very mission of UT in its founding documents - to be a land grant university available to all residents for higher education.

It's all kind of like our government currently. If we don't like what our ruling documents say, revise the story and confuse the masses. Then we can do whatever we want.

Until the masses wake up. At UT you vote with your checkbook. Close it out to them. With government, educate yourself and go vote. Simple solutions always work best.

Power corrupts.

Just last year didn't UT manage to get a player admitted who couldn't get into UF? I can't remember which guy it was, but I'm pretty sure this happened. I don't think it's the admissions standards so much as it's the fact that the academic and athletic sides seem like they would rather be at odds with one another instead of working together for each other's benefit.

As for the overall raising of the admissions standards I kind of have mixed feelings. I don't have a degree from UT, so I don't really have a dog in the fight though. On one hand, I know the better a university becomes the better it is for the state as a whole with regards to bringing in top level students who may choose to stay here and make a living once they graduate. It also makes the degrees of the former graduates all the more valuable. On the other hand, it's kind of apalling to me that I probably wouldn't even be able to get into UTK anymore. I was a well above average student, and the the though that myself or people like me can longer get into the state university is kind of sobering. 11 years ago when I graduated from high school, there was absolutely 0% chance I wouldn't be admitted. Today, I'd almost certainly be rejected. I had the test scores, but my GPA would probably keep me out.

If you will go back you will see the academic standards were changed in 2002.

That still wouldn't necessarily lay the blame at Cheek's feet. I'll agree that he doesn't seem to be helping our problems, but I don't think it's fair to say they're all his fault either.

I agree vote with your checkbook n they will have to make a change..unfortunately that tends to take longer than most fans want to wait including myself.
