Since the beginning of the BCS rankings, only 6 teams have been ranked in EVERY final top 25 from 1998-2004. None of them have finished in the top 10 more than 4 times. Those teams are:

8 Florida 1998
10 Florida 1999
7 Florida 2000
5 Florida 2001
17 Florida 2002
15 Florida 2003
23 Florida 2004

2 Florida St 1998
1 Florida St 1999
2 Florida St 2000
22 Florida St 2001
14 Florida St 2002
7 Florida St 2003
16 Florida St 2004

25 Miami-Florida 1998
19 Miami-Florida 1999
3 Miami-Florida 2000
1 Miami-Florida 2001
1 Miami-Florida 2002
9 Miami-Florida 2003
14 Miami-Florida 2004

18 Michigan 1998
8 Michigan 1999
16 Michigan 2000
16 Michigan 2001
11 Michigan 2002
4 Michigan 2003
13 Michigan 2004

1 Tennessee 1998
5 Tennessee 1999
21 Tennessee 2000
6 Tennessee 2001
25 Tennessee 2002
8 Tennessee 2003
15 Tennessee 2004

17 Texas 1998
15 Texas 1999
12 Texas 2000
7 Texas 2001
10 Texas 2002
6 Texas 2003
4 Texas 2004

Tennessee and Florida State (27) are currently out of the BCS top 25... Florida is ranked 22nd... Michigan is 15th... Miami-Fla is 3rd... Texas is 2nd. At least 2 of these teams will not be ranked in the final BCS top 25 for an 8th time. Florida and Florida State play each other, with the loser likely out of the BCS rankings.

Notice the teams that have already not been in every BCS final ranking: Southern Cal, Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Georgia,....

USC sucked in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001
Oklahoma sucked in 1998 and 1999
Nebraska had bad years in 2002 and 2004
LSU had bad years in 1998, 1999 and 2002
Va Tech had a bad year in 2003
Ohio State had bad years in 1999 and 2001
Georgia went 8-4 in 2001, 2002 and 2003

I guess we're about to join them.

Yep, the ones that aren't on the list have fired their coaches. The one - FL - that is struggling has fired one for being to low on that top 25.

Interesting.

It's not impossible if we finish 7-5 to be ranked in the final poll. Half of the teams lose their bowl game, keep that in mind. A lot of teams will be dropping out.

The final BCS ranking is after conference championship games but before bowl games. The winner of the BCS championship game is automatically no. 1 in the coaches poll.

Southern Cal was ranked in 1998; Pete Carroll's first season at USC was 2001, after USC finished the previous 2 seasons at 5-7 and 6-6.

Bob Stoops' first season at Oklahoma was 1999, after the Sooners had 5 straight non-winning seasons.

Nebraska was ranked in 2003; Bill Callahan's first season at Nebraska was 2004.... they have sucked ever since.

LSU had losing seasons prior to Nick Saban coming in 2000. (3-8 and 4-7 the previous 2 seaons)

Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer has been their coach since 1987. Since back-to-back 11-1 seasons in 1999/2000, Tech has had losses of 4, 4, 5, & 3 games the past four seasons.

Jim Tressel's first season with Ohio State was 2001. The Buckeyes were only 8-4 the previous season under John Cooper... and 6-6 the season before that. Tressel was 8-4 his first season, won the National Championship his 2nd season (14-0), then dropped a couple his 3rd season (11-2), and was 8-4 last season.

Mark Richt's first season at Georgia was 2001. Donnan had put together two disappointing 8-4 seasons prior to Richt's arrival. The only year Georgia was not ranked was 1999.

Thanks for the tremendous info. Excellent, sir.

That actually buttresses my stance about 1) coaching absolutely matters, and can cause seismic shifts in production with the same talent and 2) most top echelon programs don't put up with mediocrity for very long.

The programs that are currently very good but were not continuously part of the BCS final ranking were the ones that fired coaches.

P.S. It is notable that the BCS ranking are pre-bowl game. I say that because TN was defeated soundly in 2000, 2002, and 2003. Those losses certainly dropped them out of those rankings in 2000 and 2002.

Liper, I wish you would use your last avatar. Now I think you look like B Reynolds.

Pete Carroll didn't do well his first year. But Galen Hall sure has at Penn State as the OC. Maybe we can get it turned around quickly. I hope!! :cross:
