That's a new one on me, but it's the new catchphrase this year. What does it mean?

Using two tight ends, which Heupel has wanted to do since he got here but was not able to do until now.

That still ain't 12. That's 11 with a WR out and a second TE. That must be one BIG fella to count as two.

Has this phrase been used in the past?

12 personnel means 1 running back and 2 tight ends on the field at the same time.

Yes it does.

The QB and 5 offensive linemen are given, so to figure out how many WR there are in any given formation such as the "12 personnel" we just think:

1 back, 2 TEs
Plus 6 always from QB/linemen

Equals 9 guys.

Only 11 allowed ever on the field.

11-9= 2.

So "12 personnel" always has 2WR only.

This is why our WR stats are down so much this season. We were in 12 personnel for NCSU and a good portion of OK game.
Especially Squirrel...there is NO slot WR in 12 personnel. So Squirrel got no play in those situations because he is the slot receiver. So is his backup Braylon Edwards.

We normally run our base spread offense that is "11 personnel" which has 1RB, 1TE, and 3 WR. This is when we are most dangerous in the passing game and have always put up the most stats and points before this season. The 3rd WR is the slot WR (Squirrel) who was our leading WR last season by far in catches and yardage, and was Hyatt in 2022 who lead the SEC in yards, TDs, everything.

We are historically more balanced run/pass and will have more big plays down the field in "11 personnel" but this season we lead the SEC in rushing, and all 3 of our TEs have scored at least 1 TD from us using "12 personnel". Campbell has been hurt all season at right tackle and has never finished a 1st half. Heard has been out for the last 3 weeks at left tackle as well. This is the primary reason for "12 personnel". It gives the Oline much more help with 2TEs in there to block, and also gives us more men in the box to run the ball. We were 1 yard away from having 3 guys rush for 100 or more yards in the same game.

This is by far the most impressive coaching season so far from this staff. They have been brilliant so far on offense, defense, and special teams. CJH has adjusted in game to suit us being ahead, injuries etc in a masterful way. Very impressive coaching this season. Lets go smack Arkansas and get home for this 5 game home stand. If this team can stay focused on 1 game at a time, we will make the playoffs this year. GO VOLS

It doesn't mean that.

10 set is no tight end with 1 running back.
11 set is 1 tight end with a running back.
12 set is 2 tight ends and a running back.
21 set is 2 running backs and a tight end.

This terminology has been around for a long time.

Interesting. Now do “Jumbo”. Is that a formation with the receivers in tight or just putting really big fellers in the backfield?

that can mean a number of things. I have typically seen it as having the bigger personel in close. I have seen the phrase used with 12, 22, or other personnel grouping. One of the things they may do is bring in another O-linemen. they can have them as another Oline, or even just having them replace a TE. you may also see that second RB in 22 personnel as another Oline, or even Dline.

just literally taking a personnel grouping and making it "bigger" than it normally is. so I would think you could have Jumbo "whatever personal grouping".

could be wrong.

I just wonder why they call it "12." Why not Heavy or Jumbo, etc...? It's the verbiage.
because the 23 is called the jumbo

And of course a nickel package has 5 DBs while a dime has 6; and a half back lines up all the way back while a fullback lines up halfway back. There is a reason coaches coach football instead of math.
